Admittedly, the state of DC games in 2025 has been abysmal, with titles like Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League receiving poor receptions.

It’s unclear what the future holds for DC games, but they will work closely with the movie guys at DC Studios.

DC Studios Heads Update on DC Games

DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran recently held a press conference (via ComicBook) updating everyone on the state of the DC franchise. And while they had a lot to say about upcoming films and TV series, they also had a small update regarding games.

Safran explained, “We work incredibly closely with JB Perrette, who runs that division… It’s really the first time it’s ever been this way at Warner Bros. James and I sit with the guys that run the studios under JB whether it’s NetherRealm or Rocksteady. We sit with them and we talk about characters and stories that we’re interested in and that they’re interested in.”

For context, NetherRealm is the studio behind the Mortal Kombat games, and they also delivered the DC-centric Injustice fighting game titles; as for Rocksteady, they’re best known for being the studio behind the hit Arkham Trilogy, but they’ve recently gotten a flop with the heavily delayed and poorly reviewed Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

Gunn continues to share, “We see designs for the projects in their very earliest stages… We talk about those, we talk about what the story might be and we’ll say ‘Well, you maybe you want to go this way because we’re planning on maybe doing something with this character.’”

When is the Next Big DC Game Coming Out?

Though Gunn and Safran may have already met with some studios, Gunn confirmed that the next title will be released in a “couple of years.” It’s unclear what it could be, but the idea of a DC-centered Marvel Rivals/Overwatch game has been discussed, and Gunn and Safran said they were open to that possibility.

There was also a recent rumor that Rocksteady would be making a Batman Beyond game, but nothing official has been confirmed. It's too bad they decided to cancel the Wonder Woman game. Despite their previous success with the Shadow of Mordor titles, WB Games even closed Monolith's studio down.

Though DC Games is at a low point, it may pick up in a few years. After all, it was riding an all-time high a few years back when Marvel struggled to release titles, and DC released a steady stream of hits.

With Marvel seemingly finding a sweet spot in what some considered a tired genre, maybe there's room for DC to step back and think of the next hit concept regarding superhero IP games.

Marvel Rivals seems to be on top for now, but DC has also proven to have very popular characters. As they wait for their next big announcement, they have the resources to create something interesting.
