Tencent has announced they've acquired California-based developer Turtle Rock Studios, developer of Back 4 Blood, after buying out their parent company, Slamfire, Inc. Confirmed via a press release, that marks Tencent's latest big acquisition, having announced their intention to acquire Sumo Group back in July.

As part of this acquisition, Turtle Rock will continue operating independently out of Lake Forest, California, while co-founders Phil Robb and Chris Ashton continue leading the studio. This release also confirms there'll be no effect on Back 4 Blood, which is published by Warner Bros. Games.

Speaking in that press release, Turtle Rock Studios' president and general manager, Steve Goldstein, stated:

We are all looking forward to joining the Tencent family of studios. Tencent’s outstanding partners, global reach, deep knowledge of gaming, and unprecedented support will help us create the kinds of ambitious games we dream of, while allowing us to retain our autonomy and independent spirit.

Initially founded in 2002, Turtle Rock Studios was absorbed into Valve before Left 4 Dead's release in 2008. Renamed to Valve South, they split to become independent once again two years later, returning to their original name. We'll keep you updated with further news as we hear it.
