What Is Battlefield Portal?

Battlefield Portal is a new mode-creation tool that allows players to create custom game types with remastered assets from previous games, including older stages, vehicles, and weapons.

You don't need to own Battlefield 2042 to create in Battlefield Portal - you'll just need to own it in order to actually play your creations. Here's what the homepage looks like:

You can find the editor here, and check out our handy guide on how to use the Battlefield Portal editor too.

What Games Are Included In Battlefield Portal?

Players can use assets, maps, and weapons from Battlefield 1942, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Battlefield 3, and Battlefield 2042.

There's always the chance that in the future, we'll be able to play games like Battlefield 1, Battlefield 4, and Battlefield 5 on Portal, but we'll enjoy what we have at launch first.

Which Maps Are In Battlefield Portal?

A whole bunch of classic Battlefield maps have been confirmed for Battlefield Portal, two from Battlefield 1942, two from Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and two from Battlefield 3. There are three sizes of game modes you can choose to play.

You also have no limits to game size regardless of the map size. If you want to put just 2 players on a huge map like Renewal, go for it. If you want to put 128 players on a small layout, good luck! But you're allowed in Battlefield Portal.

Large Maps

For 128 player games, these are the maps large enough for the big-time battles you create with hordes of soldiers all piling in. Since this map size has only been available for the current generation, these are the large maps available:

  • Discarded
  • Hourglass
  • Breakaway
  • Kaleidoscope
  • Manifest
  • Orbital
  • Renewal

Medium Maps

Medium layout maps are designed for 64 players, and here are the ones you're able to play on. Some of the larger maps have been rejigged to be more appropriate for 64, as they're used for previous-gen consoles' versions of the games anyway.

  • Discarded
  • Hourglass
  • Breakaway
  • Kaleidoscope
  • Manifest
  • Orbital
  • Renewal
  • Battle of the Bulge
  • Arica Harbour
  • Valparaiso
  • El Alamein
  • Noshahr Canals
  • Caspian Border

Small Maps

These maps are meant for more close-quarters engagements. Thankfully, the medium and large layout maps have also been shrunk down to size, with little bits picked out and cordoned off so you can play small games in an appropriately-sized area.

  • Discarded: Recycling Yard
  • Hourglass: Al Salam Park
  • Breakaway: Platform
  • Kaleidoscope: Data Center
  • Manifest: Caju Operations
  • Orbital: Crawlerway
  • Renewal: Fields
  • Battle of the Bulge: St. Vith
  • Arica Harbor: Town
  • Valparaiso: Village
  • El Alamein: Axis Airfield
  • Noshahr Canals: Container Area
  • Caspian Border: Gas Station

It's important to note that large maps are not available on the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Battlefield 2042.

Which Game Modes Can You Play In Battlefield Portal?

There have been plenty of ways to play Battlefield over the years, and Battlefield Portal is holding onto some classics of the series. Of course, the game modes available are just the start of your creation process, but here are the options for the first building blocks of your game mode.

  • Conquest Large
  • Conquest
  • Rush
  • Free-For-All
  • Team Deathmatch

Remember, Conquest Large is not available on PS4 or Xbox One.

Ruleset Modifiers and Settings

This is where you really come into your own. You can edit the Battlefield Portal on the mode's homepage on your browser, before sharing the experiences with your friends via a share code they can input into their games.

There are a whole bunch of ruleset modifications you can make too.

First, you can change the fundamental rules to the game mode you've chosen. From player count to reinforcements for either team, bot presence to respawn times, basic rules can be changed after selecting your game mode. Then, you can toggle the following on or off:

  • Friendly Fire
  • Extreme Weather Events (applicable maps only)
  • Stationary Weapon Emplacements
  • Classic Soldier Weapon Tuning
  • Aim Assist
  • Aim Assist Zoom Snap

There are also sliders to adjust for things like projectile speed, damage, headshot multipliers, and more. So, if you want a ridiculously fast bullet velocity and a headshot-only ruleset, all you need to do is adjust the sliders.

Soldier Settings

You can also tweak the soldiers in play with Battlefield Portal. Here are the toggle options:

  • Prone
  • Strafe while sprinting
  • Sprint
  • Aim Down Sights
  • Health Regeneration
  • Traversal Sprint
  • Slide
  • Squad Revive

You can already start to see potential options here - why not force a hip-fire only match, or disable health regen to boost the power of support characters?

You can also use sliders to tweak Fall Damage, Move Speed, Maximum Health, Health Regeneration Rate, and Redeploy Delay. We'll be making a Sonic the Hedgehog game mode as quickly as possible.

Vehicle Modification

In Battlefield Portal, you can choose which vehicles are present and which don't make the cut. Here are the toggles you can make:

  • No Combat Vehicles
  • On-Foot Call-ins Only
  • Deploy Menu Only
  • On-Foot Call-ins and Deploy Menu
  • Spawn on Map

User Interface Options

You can make UI changes too, with the ability to toggle on/off any of the following:

  • Compass
  • Minimap (including Big Map)
  • HUD
  • Soldier Weapon Modification Plus Menu
  • Ally Identification

Forcing communication with friendlies without ally ID and friendly fire on could cause a whole lot of chaos - or enjoyment for hardcore players.

AI Options

If you have space left on the map for AI soldiers, you can add them here. Here are all the changes you can make to bots from within the Battlefield Portal browser client:

Battlefield Portal Restrictions

In order to make your game mode as perfectly as you envisage it, you'll need to use the Battlefield Portal Restrictions tab in the editor.

This allows you to pick specific Battlefield eras, as well as choose what kind of access you have to which kind of gun, specialist, class specialisation, and more.

"If you’re looking to sustain variety, and have the factions change across your map rotations, you can select Map Defaults by clicking on the Battlefield Portal logo, left of the tile for Battlefield 2042. This means that if you’re playing on El Alamein, the faction will default to 1942, and then rotate to Battlefield 3 if the next map was Caspian Border.
If you go for this option, it will prevent you from determining any restrictions to Characters, Weapons, Attachments, Vehicles, or Gadgets. So if you’re looking to fine tune things, make sure to lock in a dedicated era specific team for use across all maps."

Characters and Weapons

You can choose which specialists (classes from previous games) are available to play in this stage of editing. You can also choose which factions show up in the game. For 1942, you can play as the UK, US, and Russia, and for the rest, you can choose between the US and Russia in their various iterations.

Weapons can then be chosen. Sometimes you might want to remove everything aside from a specific piece of kit you want to be used, like a defibrillator or a sniper. Along with attachments, you can make very specific shouts on what you want to be available on spawn.

There'll be filters and easy ways to make sure the weapons are easy to customise, but players must have the relevant gun unlocked in-game, otherwise, they'll spawn in with a melee weapon.

Vehicles

Vehicles are restricted in the same way as guns and attachments - just select which ones you want to be available and they'll all behave as you told them to with the earlier settings.

Gadgets

There are a ridiculous number of gadgets in Battlefield Portal. From Claymores to Ammo Crates, the sky is the limit if you fancy creating a silly game mode where no one has a gun and everyone needs to set traps for enemies in order to score kills.

Battlefield Portal Scripting

So, how does scripting work in Battlefield Portal?

Well, thankfully there's going to be a handy tutorial on the site to help you do exactly that, and we'll have plenty of guides to point you in the right direction in Battlefield Portal.

Basically, you have access to all manner of tools and functions, and the absolute freedom to do what you want with them.

From hand-crafted UI alterations to complicated gameplay impacts, you'll have a really powerful tool to make the Battlefield Portal bend to your will.

There are also templates created by the team at Ripple Effect available to use, so if you're struggling at all with making things work or finding inspiration, check out what's already been done.

You'll also be able to download copies of other people's scripts and edit them to your heart's content, so we'll be sure to put a guide together on the best scripts in Battlefield Portal as soon as they come out.

How Much Is Battlefield Portal?

Battlefield Portal will be a part of Battlefield 2042 and won’t cost any extra money outside of the initial price.

It’s a smart choice as this makes the value of Battlefield 2042 even more impressive and should get a ton of lapsed Battlefield fans to give this upcoming entry a chance.

Will There Be Battlefield Portal Post-Release Content?

Loading...

Since Battlefield 2042 is being developed as a live-service game, EA has confirmed that any new content that will be added through seasonal updates will also be a part of the Battlefield Portal.

That means all the new maps, weapons, and Specialists added to the game can be customized in some sense through Battlefield Portal, so, theoretically, there could be an unlimited amount of content for anyone planning to go wild with custom modes.

That’s everything we know about Battlefield Portal thus far, but stay tuned for more news on the mode and Battlefield 2042 as they come.

Aside from the Battlefield Portal and the game's core multiplayer, there's also Hazard Zone if you fancy something a little different. If not, how about you check out the best guns in Battlefield 2042 to help you in the fight?
