In this Clash of Clans guide, we'll run through the uses and origins of gems, the main premium currency within Supercell's mobile hit. They may be hard to get a hold of, but the range of valuable uses makes gems more than worth the grind.

For even more on Clash of Clans, feel free to read up on how to attack in the Clan Capital mode, as well as how to earn Capital Gold. That's on top of a broader look at the recent Spring update.

How Do I Get Free Clash of Clans Gems?

Due to how useful they are, it's no surprise that practically every Clash of Clans player wants an easy way to get gems for free. Luckily there are a few in-game ways to earn them through gameplay, ensuring you can get them free of charge. However, the most common method is by purchasing them using real money on the in-game store.

Therefore, it's no surprise to see a lot of players wondering whether free Clash of Clans gems can be attained through hacks. We've gone into more detail about it before, but the long and short of it is that you'll lose your account for even attempting to modify the game. Unless you want to jeopardise your entire save, we strongly recommend you steer clear.

If you want to stay on a free-to-play route, though, you've got options when it comes to free gems. The most common way is by completing Achievements, which are long-term objectives you'll gradually fulfil as you progress. These range from clearing obstacles to earning trophies, with a maximum of 3,715 gems on offer for completing them all.

There are other in-game methods, but their gem yields are comparatively quite low. You can establish gem mines to passively harvest gems, or partake in Clan Games or broader events for a few hundred gems as the occasional award. Elite Clash of Clans players can earn thousands of gems for finishing as a top 20 player within the top three clans, though the chances of that are incredibly low.

Sadly, there's no way to get free Clash of Clans gems just as daily rewards or through code giveaways. Supercell isn't quite that generous when it comes to free gems, meaning you have to work hard for your rewards. It's that or spend money, at least.

What Do Clash of Clans Gems Do?

Gems are the main premium currency in Clash of Clans. They're used to purchase exclusive items and buildings that you can't buy using coins, such as the Mighty Statue or Builder's Huts. On top of that, they're the best way to speed up lengthy wait times, such as when you have to sit around while a building is being constructed. Spending gems will get that completed instantly, so you can continue progressing.

In general, gems can be used for most high-level purchases in Clash of Clans. Whether that's restoring your village's shields after a raid or purchasing extra doses of gold or elixir, gems are easily the most versatile and useful resource in the game.

They also have some exclusive uses in the Builder Base mode, one of the more recent gameplay options to arrive in Clash of Clans. If you wish to get your end-of-season rewards early, you can do so by paying upfront with gems. Equally, gems can also activate your Clock Tower early, so you can earn even more resources over time with it active at a lower level.

That's it for our look at Clash of Clans gems. They're a hugely valuable in-game commodity, so do all you can to save them up to help make your village-building experience that bit easier. While you're here, feel free to also learn all about the relatively new Clan Capital game mode.
