People roleplaying in GTAV is no surprise. Making a movie that will release in theaters? One that's allegedly really good according to critics? And based on Hamlet? That's a whole different can of worms.
Streaming service and film distributor Mubi announced that they will be bringing Grand Theft Hamlet to their platform and movie theaters in the United States. The film is entirely shot in-game using Grant Theft Auto V.
Grand Theft Hamlet is described as an "innovative, immersive take on Shakespeare’s Hamlet." What might surprise you to hear is that the film is actually good. And no, not in a so bad it's good kind of way.
According to reviews in the popular review site Letterboxd, Grand Theft Hamlet holds a 3.6 out of 5 rating. In fact, the movie has garnered multiple awards in different film festivals. Does winning the Documentary Feature Competition at SXSW sound prestigious enough for you?
But what is the movie actually about? Well, it might actually surprise you. It isn't quite Hamlet but make it GTA. The film follows two unemployed actors trying to make a Hamlet adaptation, using Rockstar's game as a means to an end amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
There are no real-life actors showcased. Everything moviegoers will see is portrayed in-game. While the initial thought sounds bizarre, I can't say I'm not interested in watching the film.
click to enlargeIt is at the very least a unique format to explore on a grander scale. The concept of producing shows using videogames is not entirely new after all. The iconic Red vs Blue was all shot using several Halo titles and it ran for a whopping 18 seasons.
There is no premiere date set in stone for Grand Theft Hamlet, but be sure to keep an eye on Mubi's social media so you don't miss out when it launches on their streaming platform.
