The founder of India’s Crypto Covid Relief Fund lauded Shiba Inu Coin after Vitalik Buterin’s SHIB donation helped push India’s vaccine rollout further.
Sandeep Nailwal, also the co-founder of Polygon, praised both the ShibArmy and Buterin for their support.
Before burning some 410 trillion SHIB in May, Buterin donated 50 trillion SHIB worth $900m to the Relief Fund. After the full conversion of SHIB to other currencies, this came to $463m.
SHIB Donation To Covid Relief Fund
On January 8, Nailwal, quote-tweeted news that the Relief Fund purchased syringes covering 12% of India’s population.
Nailwal said: “[It] wouldn’t have been possible without Vitalik Buterin’s donation in SHIB.”
He then praised the Shiba Inu community for their support. “Shoutout to [the] SHIB token community too for their support for the cause of covid relief in India,” he tweeted.
Crypto Relief granted $15,000,000 to UNICEF in August to purchase vaccination syringes. To date, it has spent $54,232,645 on the likes of medical equipment, oxygen cylinders, ventilators, ICU beds and emergency relief.
While the initial SHIB reaction to Buterin’s burn and the donation was mixed because of the uncertainty it created, the community has since adopted the donation as part of its history.
Dubbed the “largest crypto donation in history” by the official Shiba website, the WoofPaper V2 also states:
“VB used SHIB to make history. In an act of astonishing empathy and altruism, he responded to a humanitarian crisis on the other side of the globe by donating $1,000,000,000 of Shib to the India Covid Relief Fund.”
According to Crypto Relief’s website, the fund has raised a total of $555,801,332, with $407,801,132 still held in cryptocurrency wallets.
45% of the Indian population has been fully vaccinated, according to the latest data, with 18% also receiving one dose.
