Dying Light 2 is an action role-playing game from Techland and the sequel to Dying Light. In the game, you enter The City which is one of the last remaining human settlements. Far from being paradise, the inhabitants of The City are experiencing conflict and the infected monsters are getting stronger.
As Aiden, you enter Villedor to try to achieve your own goal but you get tangled up in the overflowing turmoil of The City. Fighting off infected zombies and angry citizens is fun on your own, but it can be even better with friends at your side.
In this guide, we're going to show you how to unlock online multiplayer co-op and we explain a bit about how it works.
How to Unlock Co-op
To start Online Multiplayer Co-Op in Dying Light 2, you need to have completed the "Markers of Plague" mission. This is at the very beginning of the game and is essentially the tutorial level. Once you complete this mission, you'll be able to join your friends.
To start playing with your friends, head into your pause menu. From here, look at the bottom of your screen and click the control for the "online menu". If some options are greyed out, head into "online options" and switch your game type to your desired setting. There are four you can choose from:
- Single Player: This means it is just you in your game and no one else can join
- Public: Anyone can join your game
- Private: Only people who are invited can join your game
- Friends Only: Your friends are the only people who can join you
Now, head back to your online menu. All of your options should now be accessible.
Find Games
This option will search for all of the game sessions that are currently online and are marked as "Public". It will tell you:
- What region the game is in
- What quest it's currently on
- The name of the player that is hosting it
- The difficulty level set by the host
- Their current City Alignment
- How many players are in the game
You can then select one to join.
Quick Join
Quick join will automatically find you a game and send you to it. You don't get a choice.
Invite Friends
Head to your "friends" option in your online menu. This will bring up a list of your friends for the console/platform you are on. Click on the friend you want to join you and select "invite" to invite them to your game.
- Learn More: Find out more about Stamina and how to increase it.
How Does Online Multiplayer Co-op Work?
When you join a co-op game, you will be playing the host's version of the story. This means that if they have made different choices until the point you join them, their city may be different from yours. A huge bonus is that if you choose to play co-op mode and you earn items or progress your character, you will be able to keep all of that when you return to your own game. The same applies if you join a co-op game, you get to keep all of the work you have done to develop your own character.
Can the Team Make Decisions?
Yes, your co-op team can make decisions to an extent. When you reach a point in the story where big decisions that could alter the game need to be made, the team gets to vote on it. Everyone is allowed to give their opinion and their say, but ultimately it will still be the host that makes the final choice.
Fending off hungry Infected and angry citizens will become easier with friends at your side in Dying Light 2. If all of you have developed your skills in different ways, you could become an unstoppable team. Read our guide that explains the combat and parkour skill trees to learn more about them.
