Dave Bautista may be done with Marvel for now, but he’s had his eyes set on some other big franchises where he could be a potential star.
Fans have wanted Bautista to play Marcus Fenix in a Gears of War movie for years. However, the film has not been updated since 2023. Now, it looks like Bautista wants the fans' help to make the project happen.
“Come On, Netflix. Get It Together.”
In a recent interview with ComicBook, Bautista just started talking about Gears of War while promoting his upcoming film In the Lost Lands. Bautista says, “Hey, start an online thing about freaking Gears of War… Come on, Netflix. Come on already.”
It’s worth noting that Bautista has been fantastic as the lead Marcus for years now, and it’s been a while since there’s been an update. When Bautista was told that fans have wanted to see him lead a Gears of War movie for a while, he said, “Dude, it’s not like I’m not badgering them… You’ve got start a petition. Come on Netflix, get it together.”
The Last Update on Gears of War
The last major update on Gears of War probably came out almost two years ago when it was announced that Jon Spaihts (Dune) would be working on an adaptation script. The Coalition, the devs behind Gears, had released this statement:
“We’re thrilled to partner with Jon and the Netflix team to bring Gears of War to life. Jon is a master storyteller with a talent for creating epic science fiction universes and he truly loves Gears of War. We couldn’t ask for a better partner to honor our franchise and deliver an authentic story to our fans.”
Enter Sera
click to enlargeFor context, Gears of War's main setting is the world of Sera, where humans are in conflict with the Locust Horde, reptilian humanoids out to destroy the planet. The game’s protagonist is Marcus Fenix, a Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG) soldier who leads a team of others in the fight against the Horde.
Though a war between humans and an alien species seems standard for sci-fi, Gears of War had set itself apart for being hyperviolent and action-heavy. Besides the soldiers in Warhammer-esque heavy armor, the series also has gnarly weapons like the Lancer—an assault rifle with a chainsaw attached to it for maximum carnage applied to nearby enemies.
Gears was one of the most popular Xbox 360 games and a jewel in the crown of its exclusives. Admittedly, the franchise has been in a slump the past few years, but maybe a movie released on Netflix could spark some renewed interest.
If anything, Netflix may have to spend a lot of money on VFX to bring Sera to life, which could be the reason for the delay. With Bautista having recently lost a lot of his weight, they may need some time for him to regain it if the movie finally gets greenlit.
No release date has been set for a Gears of War movie.
