On February 27, 2014, Minecraft creator Markus Persson announced a film adaptation of his sandbox game in a Twitter post.
“Someone is trying to leak the fact that we’re working with Warner Bros. on a potential Minecraft movie,” he said. “I wanted to be the leak.”
What’s the Minecraft movie about?
According to Mojang, Minecraft: The Movie will tell “the story of a teenage girl and her unlikely group of adventurers. After the malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, they must save their beautiful, blocky Overworld.”
Minecraft: The Movie trailer
We probably won’t see a proper trailer for a while.
Minecraft: The Movie cast and crew
Currently attached to the project is director Peter Sollett, best known for Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist (2008). More recently, Sollett’s helmed episodes of shows like HBO’s Vinyl and Hulu’s The Path.
Last we knew, the film was being written by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Allison Schroeder. Her credits include Hidden Figures, Frozen 2, and Disney’s live-action Christopher Robin, which starred Ewan McGregor.
Minecraft: The Movie release date
In October of 2020, The Hollywood Reporter wrote, “The video-game adaptation Minecraft is exiting its March 4, 2022, date and is now undated.”
The film was at one point supposed to arrive in May of 2019. That didn’t happen, obviously, and now we’ll have to wait even longer. The project’s gone through multiple directors.
Hopefully, it won’t just languish in development hell.
