A Minecraft Movie is the next video game movie arriving in theaters, and despite a lot of pessimism online, it does seem like a good family-friendly romp for both fans and newcomers to the franchise. So much so, a lot of people are loving it already.
The review embargo just lifted for A Minecraft Movie, and the early reviews are coming out online; and while a lot of them have been positive, there are some that are thinking that these reactions are getting a tad suspicious.
Early Reviews for A Minecraft Movie
As it turns out, everyone who has seen A Minecraft Movie and is commenting on it on social media have mostly great things to say about the film. Here’s what some people are saying:
Another review reads, “#MinecraftMovie is INSANELY BONKERS and is 100% what you'd expect in *this* big-screen MINECRAFT movie. Jack Black and Jason Momoa carry the comedy and its Jumanji-esque story.”
Admittedly when A Minecraft Movie was first being marketed, it was met with a lot of poor reactions, especially with the choice to have a realistic-looking Overworld and what seems to be an over-reliance on Jack Black just being himself.
However, positive reviews have been pointing out how Black and co-star Jason Momoa have absolutely great chemistry and seem to be having a lot of fun with the film; however, the same can’t be said for their co-stars who seem to have been forgotten by the narrative.
Of course, there are still some negative reviews that have come out for the film, and some don’t seem to be charmed by two bearded men cracking jokes in a video game world:
With so many fans expecting the movie to be bad, some fans are actually joking that the movie is getting ‘good review-bombed’. It is pretty suspicious that a lot of positive reviews have been coming even if the film hasn’t even been officially released in theaters yet.
Jared Hess is the King Awkward Humor
With some commenting that the movie is ‘bad on purpose’, it may be relevant to contextualize the reputation of director Jared Hess—who is the king of awkward humor.
Hess may not have had a big hit in a while, but he was best known for making his cult classic Napoleon Dynamite; and he had also worked with Black on the hit comedy Nacho Libre which was also chockfull of awkward humor and acting so terrible it’s hilarious.
When Jason Momoa’s character was first revealed for Minecraft, a lot of people had started immediately talking about how terrible the bangs and wig looked on Momoa, but once they contextualized that it was Hess at the helm of the movie, the look, complete with the pink jacket and tassels, all made sense.
Too Early to Tell
click to enlargeIt’s not yet clear if A Minecraft Movie is going to be a hit yet, but so far some are speculating that it’s going to be one of those audience favorites that critics don’t seem to love—pretty much the case with franchises like Venom and the recent Captain America movie.
As for Hess, he’s been primed for a comeback for a while, and A Minecraft Movie may just get him back on the spotlight—even just for a little while.
