Revealed back in 2019, Rare's Everwild is still a bit of an unknown quantity. The legendary developer has been working on the title for some time, with a recent report suggesting it's been in development for five years.

We still don't know what it'll be like to play, which is some feat. For now though, here is everything we do know about the new game from Rare.

Speaking on The XboxEra Podcast, VentureBeat journalist Jeff Grubb (who has a good track record for information) said the following:

"Everwild is a real mess. They try to talk diplomatically about it when they're in public, like 'people hear things about the creative director leaving and things getting rebooted and that's overstated' — it's not that overstated. They've rebooted that thing and they don't know exactly what the state of it... they are still figuring that out, and it's a mess."

"This is not me just using colourful descriptions — the people working on that game don't really know what's going on with that game. That's how much of a mess it is right now."

According to Head of Xbox Game Studios Matt Booty (talking on the Kinda Funny Gamescast), rumours on the state of Everwild might have been overblown. More specifically, Booty was quick to say that a "reset" was perhaps too extreme. Here's the full quote:

"When you look at it from the outside, when you hear a word like 'reset' and maybe 'restructure', I'll just say that those are probably a little more definite, a little more extreme than what really happens as a game comes to life.

Mark Turmell (NBA Jam creator) used to say that a game gets made a thousand small decisions at a time. That every day, you're making hundreds of small decisions and at the end of however long you work on the game, they all add up. And I think that's where the Everwild team is right now."

As per VGC, the reason for Rare's absence from E3 this year is a result of the game being ‘completely rebooted’ following the departure of its creative director. This has supposedly been corroborated by VGC sources. You'll find the full report here.

It seems a safe bet we'll see Everwild on Game Pass at launch, with this week Xbox proudly boasting of the service's potential and how they'll be handling exclusives in the future.

“With more than 23 studios worldwide creating games for Xbox, our goal is to release at least one new, first party game into Game Pass every quarter,” Microsoft said in a post on Xbox Wire. “Role playing games, shooters, strategy titles, adventure games, and more are all being built by our first party teams to ensure that there is a steady stream of compelling exclusive content to explore.”

What Is Everwild?

Everwild is a new title created by the legendary British studio, Rare. Based on what we have seen so far, Everwild paints a gorgeous picture, with some stunning visuals and a colourful world, but we're yet to see how the game plays, or anything about the story – making it a potential mystery package.

Release Date

Despite its lengthy development cycle, we still have no idea when the game will launch and it could also be years away – with GamesIndustry.biz's Christopher Dring saying the game could be a way off.

Speaking on VGC's 'Off The Record' podcast, Dring explained that “Those games that they [Microsoft] announced - Everwild, Perfect Dark, Fable - are so far away. As in, there might even be a new Xbox (a mid-tier upgrade) by the time those games come out."
