Battlefield 6’s Class Setup Has Potential, But the Meta Is Killing It

Battlefield 6 aims high by bringing back the classic class system while adding modern gameplay flexibility.

As intended, this return to form looked like a much-needed course correction after Battlefield 2042’s Specialist system stirred up so much debate.

DICE revived the well-known four-class system—Assault, Engineer, Support, and Recon—and added customization layers with Signature Traits and Gadgets.

The groundwork is good, but the meta silently wrecks it as players ignore roles in favor of the most powerful setups.

What’s the Problem with Weapon Restrictions?

Battlefield 6 no longer limits primary weapons to certain classes like previous games did. That means Support players can pick up sniper rifles, while Engineers can use assault rifles just as well as Assault players.

The unrestricted system was meant to encourage freedom, but it led to a meta dominated by a few weapons like the AR-5 and PDW-5.

These weapons have high damage, fast fire rates, and useful attachments, so players use them for efficiency no matter the class.

How Are Gadgets Making Things Worse?

Players can stack multiple high-impact tools like noob tubes and healing stims, which ends up making some classes feel bloated and others nearly redundant.

For example, Assault players can stack offensive gadgets and sustain tools to such an extent that they become lone-wolf powerhouses. Meanwhile, Engineers can stack vehicle repair kits and landmines and still compete in infantry fights due to their access to strong, all-kit weapons.

If every class does it all, the clear distinctions vanish—and so does the teamwork Battlefield usually relies on. DICE tried to maintain class identity with Signature Traits, passive perks unique to each class like Recon’s faster spotting or Assault’s quicker reloads.

But these traits don’t go far enough to pull players back into their intended roles. The perks usually don’t stack up against the raw strength of meta loadouts, so most players just skip them and use the best gear, no matter the class.

Matches end up with medics ignoring healing, engineers avoiding vehicles, and support players forgetting their ammo crates exist. Teamwork stops being necessary, and the game turns into a free-for-all with just four class names stuck on.

What’s the Community Actually Asking For?

Players have been calling for stronger boundaries between classes. A large portion wants class-locked weapons back—at least for primaries—with universal access to secondaries like carbines, PDWs, and shotguns to maintain flexibility.

It’s recommended to rebalance gadgets or cap the number of tools a player can have. There has also been backing for new sub-classes that focus on specialized roles as long as balance and team synergy are maintained.

Some alpha testers say certain classes, especially Assault, are overloaded and need a serious rework. The current balance gives Assault players too many toys and not enough limitations, which tilts the whole game in their favor.

Meanwhile, the idea of Support and Medic being merged into a single role has raised eyebrows, with many suggesting that splitting them again would bring much-needed clarity and encourage more deliberate team play.

How Can DICE Fix the Class System?

First, they could improve Signature Traits by adding larger buffs or exclusive tools that make playing your role more satisfying. Second, class-based weapon balancing needs serious attention.

If universal weapons stay, the strongest guns should at least get nerfed or have class-specific perks to avoid a one-size-fits-all setup. Finally, gadget restrictions should be revisited.

When players carry too many powerful gadgets, it favors solo tactics over team coordination. Battlefield 6 is on the right track, but without stronger boundaries and smarter motivation, its class setup risks being only skin deep.

To carry Battlefield 6 and the series forward, DICE has to tame the meta and revive the clear class roles that defined the franchise.
