Where Does Assassin’s Creed Go After Shadows?

Fans might be tired of Ubisoft, but it seems the company has won them over with the quality of Assassin’s Creed Shadows. While plenty of people wanted to see this game fail, reviews and sales have been good so far, which means the series gets to stay relevant.

But now that the series has perfected its open-world RPG gameplay, where does it go from here? Codename Hexe looks like it will take this series in a more supernatural direction, but will that freshen up the gameplay?

The main problem with Assassin’s Creed is that there’s been a lot of it to digest in recent years. While Ubisoft has tried to avoid yearly releases, the series feels oversaturated. It wasn’t that long ago when Mirage arrived to bring the franchise back to its roots until Shadows was able to win fans and critics over with its gameplay.

Now that Ubisoft has blown its open-world load with Assassin’s Creed Shadows, we wonder if a smaller stealth-focused game is next. Many fans had a great time with Assassin’s Creed Mirage, as it brought the franchise back to its stealth-oriented roots. The next game could do the same, maybe even improve what Mirage did well, but we won’t know until Ubisoft makes a big announcement.

Ubisoft previously stated that Codename Hexe will be the next open-world RPG in the series, so it will be interesting to see what’s released between Shadows and Hexe. Many predict that another smaller stealth game is next, but it’s not yet known who will take the lead in that game. Some fans hope Basim returns after Mirage, but only time will tell if Ubisoft gives us another returning protagonist.

At the least, Ubisoft has been able to shake off some of the stink that has been following them for a while. Unfortunately, that also affected the sales of good games like Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, but that’s just how the cookie crumbles sometimes.

Some fans will never enjoy Ubisoft properly, whether due to their history of abusing employees or their greedy business practices. Assassin’s Creed Shadows avoided some of that, even canceling some special editions, but fans haven’t forgotten their old ways. If Shadows can improve the company in the long run, that’ll be great, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Is the next Assassin’s Creed going to be different? Or will it end up making people hate the series all over again? Because game development takes a while, all we can do is wait.
