Netflix’s Devil May Cry anime was an interesting adaptation of Capcom’s hit video game series. While Dante felt like he came from the games, everything about this story was different and garnered a mixed reaction from fans. However, even those fans enjoyed seeing some of the references to other Capcom properties, making them wonder if they’re setting up a Capcom Anime Universe.
Minor spoilers for the Devil May Cry anime on Netflix below.
These references to other Capcom material are pretty light at first. Dante gets to throw someone at a Street Fighter 2 arcade machine, which is cute. Someone also has a Mega Man toy on their vehicle later, which is a decent enough tribute to the Blue Bomber.
However, things take a turn once they start mentioning bio-organic weapons, essentially letting us know that Resident Evil has happened or is currently happening. It seems that one reference wasn’t enough, as Dante’s friend Enzo also mentions a “Raccoon City job,” confirming that this iconic city exists in the universe.
Even though it didn’t lead to zombies or characters like Leon appearing, it was still shocking to hear major Resident Evil references in a Devil May Cry anime. Naturally, fans are curious about what happens next and if there is going to be more Capcom anime in the future. Having some kind of shared Capcom anime universe would be interesting, given how different most of these games are.
Based on what the anime was referencing, Resident Evil is the first choice for another Capcom series. Considering the bad luck these live-action movies have had adapting the source material, it seems that an animated series could fix all of these problems. If they somehow lead to Dante appearing in the show, that would be amazing.
While Street Fighter appeared in an arcade machine, that’s pretty easy to write around. They could say the games are based on these tournaments featuring some of the fan-favorite characters. An animated Street Fighter series doesn’t seem likely since there’s a live-action movie in the works, but seeing them appear would be great.
Or maybe I just want to see Cammy in animated form, who knows?
The Darkstalkers would be a great addition to Netflix’s current Devil May Cry anime. Since the series has already confirmed that demons exist, characters like Morrigan and Jon Talbain have a reason to exist as well. It would be amazing to see these characters appear in a high-profile anime, especially if it leads to some awesome fights.
Maybe a Capcom animated universe isn’t the best idea, given how other properties struggle with making interconnected media. Even Marvel, who basically introduced that concept, has struggled to maintain their momentum after Endgame. Still, those Resident Evil references were tasty and it wouldn’t hurt to have more people interested in games like Devil May Cry.
