Capcom has done a great job of preserving classic fighting games, thanks to their recent Fighting Game Collection series. Because of these collections, we now have a modern way to play titles from the Darkstalkers and Marvel vs Capcom series, not to mention classic Street Fighter titles.
With all this talk about fighting game collections, you have to wonder why other big companies haven’t jumped on this craze. The only other company who has done this is SNK, who have re-released their older King of Fighters and Fatal Fury entries through Hamster’s arcade ports. Lesser-known publishers have also released new versions of obscure fighters like The Rumble Fish.
Because other companies don’t seem to be thinking about it, here are some fighting game collections we’d like to see in the future.
Tekken
The most obvious one for this list. How has Bandai Namco not released a Tekken collection yet? Sure, entries like Tekken 7 and Tekken 5 have access to some of that older content, but fans have moved on to Tekken 8. Having a collection that has the first 6 games would be great for fans of those older titles.
Fans have wanted a legal way to play these older titles for a while now. As we said earlier, only Tekken 5 has offered fans a way to play those previous versions. Since then, it’s all about the new titles. We understand that Bandai Namco wants to focus on the present, but seeing what works in the past isn’t the worst idea.
Mortal Kombat
Another obvious one, because how has there not been a Mortal Kombat fighting game collection in the modern day? There was that older collection released during the PS3 and Xbox 360 era, but those were limited to the first three games.
Now that we’re up to the twelfth game in this series, having a collection that looks back at these older entries would be great. Fans have plenty of nostalgia for the 2D and 3D entries of this major franchise. MK 1 did do a good job paying tribute to the 3D era, but we think a proper collection would be even better.
Us fans would also accept a re-released version of Mortal Kombat 9, you can even cut Freddy Kreuger if he’s the one preventing current sales.
SoulCalibur
If we can’t get a new game in this weapon-based fighter, a collection of these gems would be the next best thing. The original SoulCalibur still plays and looks great, but most fans will miss SoulCalibur 2. Granted, that one’s a tricky release thanks to the guest characters and Spawn, but fans would love some way to play it.
Considering how the SoulCalibur games look so good, we think a collection shows just how well these games have aged. Plus, this series is easily the most accessible for fighting game newbies, thanks to the fun button-mashing. Bandai Namco definitely needs to consider re-releasing this.
Bloody Roar
Bloody Roar is the most obscure entry in this list and was the furry awakening for many fighting game fans. With only four entries and a unique concept, we think this fighter deserves to have a collection more than most. Considering how hot fighting games have been over the past few years, the fact this series has remained dormant for so long is almost criminal.
The concept of this series is easy to get; you transform into animal forms and beat each other up. At the time, it was amazing to see characters turn into something completely different, especially in the PS1 days. It’s a shame that this series never made it out of the PS2 generation, as PS3 and Xbox 360 entries would have awoken even more furries had they existed.
