Monster Hunter Wilds is two months old, and players have already sunk their teeth into its expansive endgame content. Many have hunted the Arch-Tempered Rey Dau, taken down the Leviathan Mizutsune, and conquered the High Rank version of Zoh Shia. Now, everyone’s waiting for the next big update.
While the game is a massive improvement over previous Monster Hunter titles, one aspect has players scratching their heads: what’s going on with the Frenzied Monsters, and why do they feel so underwhelming?
What Are Frenzied Monsters?
Frenzied Monsters are creatures infected by Gore Magala’s "Frenzy" affliction, a virus that’s been a recurring problem in the Monster Hunter mythos. Gore Magala is the only monster capable of spreading it. When it's nearby, other monsters in the area may become infected—even our Hunter.
These infected monsters move faster, but the catch is that
they have noticeably reduced health. Most Frenzied hunts wrap up in under ten minutes, leaving many players wondering: What’s the point of their presence if they go down so easily?
Frenzied Materials Are Useless
Hunting Frenzied Monsters drops unique Frenzied materials. While the name might sound exotic, they’re not especially useful in the endgame. They can be scrapped into Artian Parts if you’ve got extras lying around, but beyond that, there’s little incentive to collect them. The materials lose all value once you’ve crafted Gore Magala’s armor set.
More Frenzied Monsters on the Way?
It’s still too early to tell what Capcom has in mind for Frenzied Monsters, but more Title Updates are on the horizon, especially with Lagiacrus arriving this summer. Gore Magala is still largely confined to the Iceshard Cliffs, though in the latest update, it’s been spotted roaming the Ruins of Wyveria. Unfortunately, there aren’t any Frenzied Monsters to hunt there, as Constructs or Guardians mostly populate the biome.
As things stand, Frenzied Monsters don’t offer much in Monster Hunter Wilds. But I’m holding out hope that upcoming content changes that, especially if Shagaru Magala eventually emerges and takes over Gore’s role, turning up the difficulty. Right now, Frenzied hunts feel like a missed opportunity. Most players ignore them and chase what matters: a proper challenge.
