Many indie games have found success in today's market, with some even going viral on social media—games such as R.E.P.O. and Schedule I, which have their own unique charm and selling points. The new viral game PEAK is what everyone is raving about these days, and here's why it'll be your latest obsession as well.
In PEAK, you and your friends get on a flight for a vacation. However, things don't go as planned; your plane crashes. You will need to climb to the top of each biome by helping one another, light the campfire, and reach the PEAK to get rescued (unless you get sabotaged).
Why PEAK Will Be Your Next Obsession
At first glance, you might think that PEAK is too simple, but there are several reasons why this game will be your (and your friends') next obsession. Will you be able to reach the top?
Simple concept, endless replayability
PEAK has a simple concept, but the overall replayability is fantastic. At first, I thought that it'd just be a one-time game that we'd play maybe a couple of times. However, the fact that the maps are procedurally generated every 24 hours helps keep things fresh, allowing you and your friends to tackle the mountains repeatedly, trying to find the best ways to climb each one.
Challenging maps and circumstances
There are currently 5 biomes in the game to challenge you. Each day, the maps are regenerated (the timer is on the main menu), which changes the whole layout of the mountain. Whenever we started a playthrough, the first few times made us question whether the mountains are doable (most of the time, they are. You just have to find the right spots and get lucky).
There will be obstacles that get in your way, such as poisonous plants in the tropics and the unforgiving cold in the alpine regions. Other than that, you will have to manage the weight of your items (it will be harder for the player who wears the backpack), your hunger, and more.
I think one of the funniest mechanics in the game is when you meet the Scoutmaster, if you use a specific item, or as a punishment for leaving your teammates behind. For the latter, you will have to be 200 meters away from your friends for it to be triggered. You will need to climb as fast as possible or accept your fate, which will earn you a badge.
Several items in the game can make the climb easier, such as a rope, a chain gun, and food, but it remains challenging nonetheless. You will need to rely on yourself and your teammates to find ledges and hope you don't fall to your deaths.
Adorable art style and characters
I think one of the most charming aspects of PEAK is the character customization, which you can do by using your passport at the airport before starting the game. There are a lot of options for facial features and hats, and you can earn more by collecting badges (or achievements) in the game. Additionally, the game features adorable capybaras.
Fun with friends
While the game is fulfilling if you manage to climb the mountain on your own, it's still best played with friends or other people. There are even mods where you can have more than 4 players in the game. Your friends can help you up when you don't have enough stamina, put up ropes and pitons to support the others, and even carry you when you become incapacitated from the cold. You will also need to use the limited resources you have strategically, as it will be a long time before you can find more supplies.
There is proximity voice chat in the game, which will help you figure out where your friends are. While teamwork is key in PEAK, it can sometimes be challenging when you're trying to stand up on a ledge with three other people. It will be hectic, and sometimes you won't be able to do anything but laugh at your friends for falling behind.
It's incredible how Aggro Crab and Landfall created the game in just a month for a game jam. Despite its relatively brief development time, the game has relatively few bugs. The viral popularity and sales numbers attest to the quality of PEAK. It also serves as inspiration for indie developers who are hoping to share their creativity and games with the world.
