One of the first steps to lasting longer in SCUM 1.0 is to expand your storage, and building the Improvised Courier Backpack makes that simple.

The game leaves out some details, so new players could overlook key mechanics like Vicinity that are important for crafting.

This means that if you wander off or don’t drag them into your hands or clothing slots (like pockets or holsters), you risk leaving behind essential materials without realizing it.

That’s why managing your inventory correctly is the first step toward building this backpack.

How To Craft In SCUM?

You’ll begin with almost nothing when you spawn, so start by looking for two rocks on the ground.

Combine them using the crafting menu to make a stone knife. This knife is your tool for everything: cutting bushes, tearing clothes, and more.

Once you have it, drop your shirt and pants on the ground and right-click to tear them into rags.

These rags will fall into the vicinity unless you have empty space in your pockets, so be sure to move them into your inventory immediately, or you may lose them when walking away.

You need at least three rags to craft the backpack later. Next, you’ll need to gather a lot of sticks.

How To Get More Crafting Materials In SCUM?

Use your stone knife to cut down bushes, which will drop long sticks.

When bushes are scattered, bundle sticks together to carry more at once and bring them to a central spot. After that, you’ll need to make rope, and you’ve got two main ways to do it.

Start by making straps from rags, then join five of them to form an improvised rope. The other is by using sticks directly to craft the rope, depending on which materials you’ve got more of.

Either way, make sure the rope ends up in the same vicinity area or in your inventory with the rags and knife.

Once everything—knife, rags, and rope—is either on the ground in one spot or in your backpack or inventory, open the crafting menu.

Type “Improvised Courier Backpack” into the search bar, and the option should appear. If it doesn’t, double-check that all the materials are present and not scattered.

When the craft button lights up, click it, and your character will begin crafting the backpack. It increases how much you can carry, which is super useful for picking up food, tools, or materials.

If gear goes missing early on, resetting your character is usually quicker than hunting for rags or crafting a new knife.
