There’s no denying it, Blood of the Dawnwalker takes a few pages from CD Projekt Red’s acclaimed Witcher series.
From the gritty medieval setting to the same level of blood and gore, this action-RPG from Rebel Wolves feels like Witcher 3, but with one addition: it comes with vampires.
What Is Blood of the Dawnwalker?
Blood of the Dawnwalker is an action RPG from Rebel Wolves centered on a man cursed with vampiric powers. However, he’s still human, which means the sun doesn’t burn him to ash like the other vampires in the game. We’ve covered more of this in a previous article here.
What Makes Blood of the Dawnwalker Feel Like The Witcher 3?
Rebel Wolves recently showcased Blood of the Dawnwalker’s gameplay, and it’s strikingly familiar. The protagonist swings his sword, uses a weapon wheel, and struts through a medieval town with nothing but swagger and a strong sense of self... sounds familiar?
It’s no coincidence. Rebel Wolves is made of former CD Projekt Red developers. The project is led by Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, game director of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz, quest director of Cyberpunk 2077. Their shared expertise in third-person action RPGs clearly shines through. Even the over-the-top gore feels reminiscent of Geralt casually decapitating enemies.
It Could Fill the Void Before Witcher 4 Arrives
Blood of the Dawnwalker could be the perfect game to tide fans over until Witcher 4 drops. Neither title has a confirmed release date yet, but it’s entirely possible that Rebel Wolves’ vampire RPG launches first.
While it mirrors CD Projekt Red’s writing quality, it also introduces a fresh concept: a superpowered human with vampiric traits. Geralt might be a mutated Witcher, but Coen (the protagonist) is a different kind of monster, one who stalks the shadows and feeds on blood.
A Perfect Game Even for Non-Witcher Fans
While Blood of the Dawnwalker clearly caters to Witcher fans, it’s also a great entry point for newcomers to the action-RPG genre. The gameplay may echo Witcher 3, but its directional sword-fighting system feels more inspired by Ubisoft’s For Honor, similar to what Blades of Fire by MercurySteam tried to do.
Unlike The Witcher, Blood of the Dawnwalker isn’t based on any pre-existing novels. So there’s no required reading, just jump into the dark, gritty world and start slashing.
Blood of the Dawnwalker may carry the spirit of Witcher 3, but it ultimately stands on its own, drenched in blood and bursting with potential. I can’t wait to get my hands on it.
