Mario Kart World has brought back Mission Mode, something players didn't know was possible. This was a very popular mode in Mario Kart DS, offering fans single-player challenges to complete and exclusive bosses to fight. Gamers have wanted to see this feature return for years now, and it looks like they're finally getting it.
Because Mission Mode resonated with so many when it was on the DS game, fans have high hopes for its return on Switch 2. Having more single-player content is always good, as it will give early Switch 2 owners a reason to return to this racer multiple times. Plus, given how expensive these games are, they might want to get the most out of this launch title.
So, without further ado, here’s what we know about the newly announced Mario Kart World Mission Mode.
Mission Mode is Free Roam Mode
Rather than just being a mode fans can pick in the menu, Mario Kart World’s Mission Mode is also the Free Roam Mode. This means that players will find missions as they explore the various tracks and see how they are connected. It makes the free-roaming more interesting and shows that the devs played Xbox’s Forza Horizon series.
These optional objectives are currently called P-Switches, which can be found around the giant map of World. Based on the most recent Direct shown, missions can range from coin-collecting to time limit challenges and occasional obstacle avoidance.
How Many Missions Are in Free Roam Mode?
Nintendo claims that hundreds of these P-Switches are in the game, so completionists have their work cut out for them. That’s a lot of missions, and it’s not yet clear how they will differ from each other, though we know these are all going to be race-related. At the very least, fans who like playing by themselves will have plenty of extra activities to enjoy.
Still, it’s good to know that free roaming won’t just be mindlessly driving through tracks and maps, even if the driving is good. Even if these missions are short, we’re sure fans will enjoy killing time by finishing these objectives.
Will There Be Boss Missions?
One of the best parts of Mission Mode in Mario Kart DS was some of the boss missions players could participate in. Characters like King Boo, King Bob-omb, Goomboss and more gave fans a unique challenge that made these missions fun. Fans are hoping to see these bosses in the Free Roam mode of Mario Kart World, but that hasn’t been confirmed yet.
Because World is a modern game, there’s always a chance that bosses could be added as free updates or DLC. They could also be part of the game’s Battle Mode, which focuses more on the kart racer’s iconic weapons. It will be interesting to see what bosses the game gets, assuming they’re all coming.
That’s everything we know about Mission Mode in Mario Kart World. It will be interesting to see if this mode lives up to the one in Mario Kart DS. Hopefully, future entries in the series will also have this mode.
