As we begin looking forward to FIFA 22 and the coming season on FUT, let’s start to take a look at some potential new icons that could be headlining the class of FUT 22.

In FUT 21, we’ve seen a total of 12 new icons added to the pool of cards available, including Samuel Eto’o, Eric Cantona, Ferenc Puskas and the late addition of David Beckham.

With a number of high profile retirements during this season, could we see some stars of recent years making it into FIFA 22’s Icon player pool?

Our FIFA 22 Icon Wishlist

With some high profile retirements this year, with a number of top players from yesteryear still available to include as icons in FIFA 22, here are some of our favourites that we’d love to see added next season in FUT.

Alfredo Di Stefano

This year saw the addition of Ferenc Puskas, one of the most gifted strikers of the 1950s and 1960s, but we’re yet to see his equally prolific strike partner, Alfredo Di Stefano.

We’d love to be able to reunite what may be the finest striking duo in footballing history in FUT, perhaps linking them into a past and present Real Madrid setup.

Cafu

We saw Philipp Lahm added into FUT 21 as a top tier RB option, however, we’re yet to see Cafu, equally regarded as the finest right-sided full-back of all time, added into FIFA.

A player that made the RB role his own, frequently overlapping down the wing to swing in crosses, Cafu would be an incredible addition into FUT, and as a world cup winner, he’s truly deserving of Icon status.

Wayne Rooney

Following Wayne Rooney’s retirement as a player, it’s very likely that we see him as an Icon very soon in FIFA.

Having appeared on over half a dozen covers of FIFA between FIFA 06 and FIFA 12, it would appear that Rooney has a good working relationship with EA, that may facilitate a transition into a FUT Icon.

We’d love to see England’s leading goalscorer receiving an icon card next year, perhaps with the stats of some of his old FUT cards, such as hit FIFA 12 TOTY item with 90 pace!

Gianluigi Buffon

With his contract expiring in the summer, it may be time for Buffon to hang up his gloves after a highly successful, lengthy career, however, we’ve seen Buffon surprise us with more contract renewals than we can remember!

The veteran goalkeeper is arguably Italy’s best ever shot-stopper, and is in the discussion as one of the best ever to stand between the sticks, and would be a worthy inductee into the Icon class of 22.

Vincent Kompany

With Kompany having announced his retirement from football in August 2020, there was perhaps not enough time to put the wheels in motion for an icon card in FUT 21, however, for FIFA 22 there’s a definite possibility!

The Belgian is certainly up there as one of the best Premier League centre-halves of the last decade, playing to a consistently high standard for Manchester City for most of the 2010s.
