It’s not a great year to be a Call of Duty fan and Christopher Judge’s joke during The Game Awards solidified that fact. Various developers of the game weren’t a fan of the God of War actor’s joke, even though they weren’t the only devs who got ribbed during the show.

For context, Judge joked about his overly long speech during The Game Awards last year, claiming it was longer than the Modern Warfare 3 campaign. Charlie Intel, a website that follows Call of Duty news, shared several tweets of devs who pointed out that CoD games tend to be better and outsell God of War. That’ll show him.

Most fans seem to agree that Judge’s joke about Call of Duty was pretty harmless in the grand scheme of gaming, especially since bad games are made fun of all the time. No Man’s Sky was once considered a joke by the gaming community and Geoff Keighley joked about that briefly during the same Game Awards show.

Sean Murray, the founder of Hello Games, was criticized back in the day for hyping No Man’s Sky too much, claiming players could do anything when they could barely do anything at launch. Thankfully, the game is now good since it’s received several updates and expansions, with Murray even joking about this on Twitter.

Seeing the CoD devs get bent over a silly joke over their bad game isn’t a good look, especially since the Modern Warfare 3 campaign is still short and bad. Admittedly, game development is a hard and thankless job that doesn’t get the appreciation it deserves (especially this year), but this wasn’t the joke to get angry over.

It will be interesting to see the future of Call of Duty now that Modern Warfare 3 is something of a failure. While we’re sure most fans purchased the game for its multiplayer, which is solid enough, it seems that the yearly format is hurting this franchise.
