Following Microsoft’s intended acquisition of Activision, tensions between the creators of Xbox and Sony continue to intensify. With the publisher behind some of the biggest franchises in gaming, including Call of Duty, Sony claims the future of the shooter franchise on its PlayStation platform is in doubt.
Despite numerous claims from both sides, Microsoft wants Activision franchises to appear on the popular Game Pass subscription model but there’s a chance investigations from industry regulators put a halt to plans before they gain traction.
A recent report from the New York Times claims Call of Duty will remain on PlayStation for another ten years which is great news for Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 fans.
Ten more years for PlayStation CoD
An additional ten years is contrary to a statement made by PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan. In a statement to GamesIndustryBiz, Ryan says Call of Duty will remain on Sony’s platform for three years after the end of its existing deal with Activision.
“After almost 20 years of Call of Duty on PlayStation, their proposal was inadequate on many levels and failed to take account of the impact on our gamers,” states Ryan.
While Call of Duty is a sticking point in arguments between Sony and Microsoft, the hugely successful franchise isn’t the main reason behind the Activision acquisition. A Bloomberg interview with Spencer reveals mobile and PC gaming were the catalysts behind the monumental deal.

“The biggest gaming platform on the planet is mobile phones. One and a half billion people play on mobile phones. And I guess, regretfully as Microsoft, it’s not a place where we have a native platform.”
Will Call of Duty become an Xbox exclusive?
At the time of writing, it’s still unclear if the Call of Duty franchise will become an Xbox exclusive. If the New York Times’ report is accurate, then there’s still a decade before there’s any exclusivity coming into play.
There’s also a chance the deal doesn’t make it past the regulators. So, if you’re concerned about PlayStation’s future with Call of Duty, there’s still a while before you might need to switch platforms.
