Daredevil actor Charlie Cox, the voice behind Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s Gustave, recently shared insights on game development and his experience being part of the massive gaming phenomenon that is Clair Obscur.
In the middle of an interview panel from a pop culture convention, Charlie Cox took a detour from superhero talk to open up about his character Gustave in Clair Obscur, admitting that he “...felt like a fraud” whenever fans congratulated him on his role in the game. The reason? He only recorded his lines in a single four-hour session, remarkably short compared to the time other actors, like Ben Starr (Verso), spent in the booth.
Fans were stunned, not just by the confession but by Cox’s performance. Gustave is one of the game’s central characters, with plenty of dialogue, and yet Cox wrapped up his recording in just a few hours. It’s a testament to his talent and professionalism, and fans didn’t hold back in praising him for it.

Paired with Ben Starr’s Verso and Jennifer English’s Maelle, the star-studded lineup is one of the many reasons the game continues to receive critical acclaim. Gustave’s storyline, in particular, left players stunned with its unexpected conclusion, myself included. Seeing Cox receive so much praise despite only working on the game for less than a day is nothing short of astounding.
Hollywood actors in games are becoming more common, especially in titles by developers like Hideo Kojima, whose games feature stars like Lea Seydoux, Norman Reedus, and Mads Mikkelsen in Death Stranding. In Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Charlie Cox isn’t the only A-list name, as renowned actor Andy Serkis also appears, voicing Renoir Dessendre.

While details on Serkis’ involvement remain scarce, it’s possible his recording process was similarly brief.
