Dead by Daylight has announced its next killer, and anime fans are shocked by this huge reveal. Ken Kaneki from Tokyo Ghoul will be hunting players down with his new bloodlust and powerful tentacles, making him a huge threat in this horror title. Considering how the series always gets or makes up the worst people imaginable, reimagining a hero like this is a brave move.

According to the PlayStation Blog, Kaneki has a slightly different backstory compared to the anime and manga. Like in his canon backstory, Kaneki is able to survive and defeat the sadistic Ghoul Jason. However, upon escaping this terrible villain, Kaneki is possessed by a black fog and is swept into The Entity’s realm, causing the backstory to make sense for this universe.

This drastic change was necessary for Dead by Daylight, as it wouldn’t make sense to use a good person like Tokyo Ghoul’s Ken Kaneki if he were still a hero. Making this an evil version of the character possessed by The Entity keeps things in line with the franchise and allows him to be a scary force in the game. Needless to say, running away from Kaneki is going to be creepy, but using him could also be good fun.

While fans are used to Western characters like the Xenomorph and Freddy Krueger in the game, it’s surprising to see anime protagonists in this multiplayer experience. Characters from Japanese properties have popped up before, but they usually fit the mold for the horror title more. Think Pyramid Head from the Silent Hill games or Capcom’s various Resident Evil characters.

It will be interesting to see how fans of Tokyo Ghoul react to the move, especially since the anime and manga ended some time ago. Fans did get a Tokyo Ghoul multiplayer game a while back, but it wasn’t very good and no one really wants to talk about it.

Ken Kaneki from Tokyo Ghoul will make his Dead by Daylight debut on April 2.
