The Merc With a Mouth has returned to video games, this time in the VR realm, with Marvel’s Deadpool VR. Announced during the Summer Game Fest, this appears to be a high-quality single-player VR title that fans of the niche gaming technology have been waiting for. With Deadpool’s signature quips and plenty of love for the comics, this could be something special.
Coming to Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S, this virtual Marvel adventure has How I Met Your Mother star and former Spider-Man voice actor Neil Patrick Harris as Deadpool. Harris is able to convey the Merc’s personality quite well, sounding similar to his live-action actor Ryan Reynolds. It will take some adjusting since Nolan North played the character in games for a long time, but Harris does a good job here.
Gameplay-wise, there’s a lot to like here in Marvel’s Deadpool VR. While the character does have his signature guns and swords, he also has some unique weapons that look creative. Standing out is what appears to be a cosmic gun that acts like a whip or grappling hook. Using this gun, he can swing around like Spider-Man or batter his opponents more, which looks like a ton of fun.
Because this is a Marvel game, there’s plenty of fan service to be had with the trailer. Mephisto, Flag Smasher, and Omega Red make appearances throughout, all of whom should have fun boss battles. We also see Deadpool take on thugs from The Hand, which could lead to appearances from Daredevil or Elektra.
It will be interesting to see how Marvel’s Deadpool VR does when the game comes to Quest 3 and Quest 3S later this year. Everything about this game looks quality, to the point that it doesn’t look like we really “need” VR for it. The game is exclusive to Quest 3, but we wouldn’t be shocked if it gets ported to current-gen consoles as a first-person shooter in a few years.
