More Dragon Quest Remakes From Square Enix Seemingly Confirmed

Dragon Quest has been on the minds of JRPG fans lately, with the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D remake impressing and Dragon Quest 12 not having a release date yet. While we do have the Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D remake coming later this year, fans are wondering what’s next. It looks like the answer is more remakes.

A rumor has recently come out that Square Enix is working on a remake of the beloved Dragon Quest 7. This led to plenty of back and forth, as some fans want that remake, while others are hoping older titles get that treatment first. Jason Schreier commented on a ResetEra thread, where he teased that several remakes are in the works, including one of Dragon Quest 7.

Shreier told fans on the thread (via the Gaming Leaks and Rumours subreddit), that Square Enix “wants to remake as many DQ games as possible for modern platforms.” The esteemed game reporter also tempered expectations, telling fans these remakes won’t be like the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy. When a fan thought this meant no DQ7 remake, Schreir said, “I didn’t say there’s no remake!” getting fans excited.

There already was a Dragon Quest 7 remake released on Nintendo 3DS many years ago, so we wouldn’t be surprised if Square Enix re-releases this. While we could expect an uprezzed version of the 3DS game, which is what they did for Bravely Default, many are hoping this is a full-blown remake or even an HD-2D one. We’ll have to wait for Square Enix to confirm this, but their recent DQ output has fans hoping.

It will be interesting to see if all of these remakes will eventually lead to Square Enix revealing Dragon Quest 12. Granted, we don’t want to wait for several remakes just to get that anticipated new installment, but just having something from the series will keep fans talking. Let’s just hope that Square Enix eventually gives us details on that 12th game, no matter how different it is.
