While they may not have gotten the massive expansion announcement they wanted out of The Game Awards last month, Elden Ring players have still had new content to dig into, with the long-awaited Colosseum DLC providing a fresh challenge for those who now consider boss battles to be a walk in the park.
However, it seems some of them are already on their way to mastering the arena, having resorted to using a dance pad or spamming spirit summons to spice things up, or abandoned PVP in favour of attempting feats like trying to beat the game on two screens at once.
Meanwhile, those who aren’t knee-deep in the kind of hardcore challenge runs that’ll have you battling Malenia in your sleep are seemingly taking time to reminisce about their early days with the game, with their current topic of conversation being the nicknames they used to have for certain enemies.
Do you have any affectionate monikers for the residents of The Lands Between?
These amusing aliases form the subject of a thread on the r/eldenring subreddit, which began with a post from user silkendreams, who kicked things off by asking: “What did you call enemies before learning their true name?”
Their fellow Tarnished were quick to let loose a deluge of denominations and, while some were naturally the product of frustration at being killed repeatedly and therefore lurked on the sweary side of the English language, many were quite funny or endearing.
For example, user Cynical_Feline admitted that to them, bandits have always been “bandit type shifty guys” and anyone who pairs a sword and shield with any type of heavy plate armour is automatically dismissed as a knight, while mlhgst declared: “(The) Giant Land Octopus was ‘Landopus’ and quite honestly it never changed.”
Meanwhile, some players suggested that they’d struggled to uncouple their naming instincts from other games like Dark Souls and Skyrim, with user DonCheadle_official saying: “I still refer to most of the rotting humanoids as hollows.” and Army_of_midgets adding: “I always call the rats Skeevers.”
On the other hand, user BuffNerfs revealed: “(I) used to think imps were gargoyles. Then I found a real gargoyle and still kept calling the imps gargoyles until I realised that doesn't make any sense.”
Thankfully, user Userman1248 explained that they’d quickly developed a solution to avoid any mixups like those above, declaring: “I simply call them ‘insert colour of tunic’ guys.”
Regardless of whether you panic when confronted by two different Elden Ring enemies that happen to have picked the same coloured tunic that day, make sure to follow us for coverage of some interesting streamers and guides to Elden Ring’s newest addition.
