Fallout 4 modder brings Skyrim-style alchemy to The Commonwealth

When they’re not recovering from Christmas, playing post-apocalyptic dress-up, or practising their mini-nuke touchdown throws, Fallout 4 players can often be found exploring the area surrounding pre-war Boston for undiscovered diversions.

Mods can often provide the fresh entertainment these Sole Survivors seek, for example, via quests involving hidden Chinese nuclear bunkers or simply by injecting abandoned metro tunnels with a survival horror-esque atmosphere that'll have your trigger finger itching at every distant scream or slam.

However, if you’re a vault dweller who prefers to live a peaceful life away from the fury of combat, a new mod might be worth adding to your load order.

Fancy brewing up some potions and elixirs during your next Fallout 4 playthrough?

The mod in question is called ‘Alchemy - New Flora for Botanists’ and is the work of prolific modder Zorkaz. Some of their previous work has spruced up Diamond City a little and made it possible to travel from one side of the map to the other via some creepy underground tunnels.

This time, they’ve channelled the naturalistic energy of Skyrim’s green-fingered gatherers into the post-apocalypse, revamping The Commonwealth’s flora and fauna by adding around 24 new plant and fungi variants to Boston’s ecosystem and ensuring that you’ll run across pickable goodies much more regularly.

Spy a tree on the horizon? It might be home to a Cobra Shroom that’ll offer you better night vision at the cost of a little poison damage. Clearing out a group of Super Mutants from a scrapyard? You might run across a Dragonshroom that’ll boost your energy resistance. Checking up on your settlers at Tenpines Bluff? You might find a Hillflower that’ll cure your addiction to jet.

Head back to a chemistry station with your haul and you might be able to craft some of the forty new recipes added by the mod, which cover everything from sleep teas that eliminate the need for survival players to go bed-hunting to poisonous mixtures that’ll grant you XP provided you don’t die from imbibing them.

Also, be sure to look out for a few legendary variants of ingredients as you explore the wilderness, with these adding some extra potency to the brews you throw them into.
