Things aren’t looking too good for Ubisoft’s Far Cry extraction shooter, codenamed “Maverick.” It’s been reported that this multiplayer spinoff has now been rebooted, after years of being in development. While it’s not the end just yet, fears about this shooter’s fate are pretty justified based on the history of other games.

Insider Gaming reports that Maverick, which has been in development since 2023, has been rebooted after all this time. Based on the report, this was supposed to be a multiplayer spinoff for the unreleased Far Cry 7, but it didn’t review well with the company. After some tests, it was decided that the shooter would be rebooted, which must be heartbreaking for the developers.

Sources from Ubisoft told Insider Gaming that the “writing was on the wall” for this extraction shooter, with some devs predicting this would happen in the last few months. This shooter would have been set in Alaska and have players attempt to survive a harsh environment filled with wild beasts and opposing players. While this is an intriguing concept, it’s not unique enough to stand out, which probably led to restarting development.

Although none of this is good news, it’s not the end for this Far Cry extraction shooter. Fans will remember how Nintendo restarted the development of Metroid Prime 4, bringing in Retro Studios to help with the installment. It took a while, but we finally got an update on the game and Nintendo claims we’re getting the shooter on Switch later this year.

Hopefully, Ubisoft can pull it together and release this game when it’s ready for everyone to try it out. The company’s luck with multiplayer shooters has been pretty rough as of late, having to cancel XDefiant this year, so things aren’t looking good. Either focus on the single-player aspect of the new game or think of something unique for this multiplayer title.

Is Far Cry going to come back in a major way after being dormant for a few years? Or is this game going to get delayed to infinity like the 2026 Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake? We’ll have to wait and see.
