While they can often be found studying the techniques of streamers like Ninja or testing out new weapons to work out which of them offers the best chance of obtaining a victory royale, Fortnite players aren’t solely driven by pragmatism.
Much like their brethren in the communities of games like Skyrim or Elden Ring, some of the battle royale’s top participants sometimes like to try and feel a bit immersed in the colourful, lore-filled world that plays host to the game’s unending battles.
Currently, these hardcore Fortniters are discussing how some of the game’s collab skins fight, with one having suggested that Assassin’s Creed’s Ezio probably shouldn’t be running around the place with a shotgun.
Do you think Fortnite’s getting a bit too surreal?
This discourse is the subject of a recent thread on the subreddit r/FortNiteBR, which began with a post from user FrozenLichy, who asked: “Are (the) Ezio, (Xenomorph from) Alien, etc, skins too weird to wield firearms?”
The majority of their fellow players seemed to suggest that, while FrozenLichy had a point, their immersion wasn’t too badly affected by the gun-toting Xenomorphs, with user Jakernova saying: “Yes (it’s weird), but at the same time it's cool to see my favourite characters in the game so it doesn't really bother me all that much.”
User SurfaceTension2 went so far as to invoke the game’s almighty lore to back up why they felt unbothered by Ezio no-scoping noobs and hitting the griddy, saying: “It gets less weird when you remember they’re just copies of the characters made to make money-I mean, copies of the characters where their memories are mostly faded away and reset every 22 minutes to survive.”
Meanwhile, some Assassin’s Creed fans suggested that Ezio’s canonical use of a hidden gun in his blade makes it fine for him to use Fortnite’s array of firearms, though FrozenLichy responded that they thought going from this primitive weaponry to laser blasters is a bit too far of a logical leap.
On the other hand, few users did suggest that they also avoid playing as skins that look too goofy while packing heat, with ronjohnson01 saying: “The only time I play as collabs is when it makes sense for them to be running around using guns. Like Nathan Drake, Mandalorian, Walking Dead characters, etc. It just feels so weird to play as Darth Vader, Spider-Man, Superman, etc. and be limited to using guns.”
