Uh oh. Elden Ring: Nightreign is getting tougher, and that’s saying a lot for a game already known for its punishing difficulty and intense boss fights. Just recently, FromSoftware quietly added an enhanced version of the Gaping Jaw boss, turning it into a superboss similar to how Monster Hunter handles its Arch-Tempered monsters.

What’s the Deal with the Enhanced Gaping Jaw?

Now dubbed the “Everdark Sovereign” Gaping Jaw (Adel, Baron of the Night), this upgraded boss is ready to deliver early doom to any unsuspecting Nightfarers.

Not only does it have a significantly larger health pool, but its attack power and speed have also been ramped up dramatically. Players are reporting it zipping across the battlefield and picking off teammates one by one with brutal, lightning-based strikes.

Is It Harder than the Original Gaping Jaw?

Definitely. Like the original fight, this boss still has two phases. The first is relatively manageable, especially if you’ve stocked up on poison attacks, which it’s still vulnerable to. But the real challenge begins in the second phase, where the boss unleashes a relentless barrage of lightning storms across the map, almost like a berserk version of Bloodborne’s Darkbeast Paarl.

While a skilled team might make it through, the fight is no walk in the park. It’s not impossible, just long, chaotic, and exhausting.

How Is This Similar to Monster Hunter?

Elden Ring: Nightreign seems to be borrowing a page from Monster Hunter's superboss playbook, which has become a staple in many modern action RPGs.

In particular, Monster Hunter’s Arch-Tempered monsters are among its most challenging endgame content, with difficulty depending on the monster.

In Monster Hunter: World, AT Velkhana and Namielle are notorious for giving players a tough time. In Wilds, the newly introduced AT Rey Dau is already giving players serious trouble.

This same design shows up in the “Everdark Sovereign” bosses in Nightreign. They have massive HP, deal heavy damage, and are tailored for high-level players. It's a perfect fit for a game that thrives on challenge and rewarding risk.

More difficult bosses are coming soon.

The Everdark Sovereign Gaping Jaw will be available from June 19 to June 26. More ES bosses are on the way, including Sentient Pest and Darkdrift Knight, both getting their own souped-up versions.

FromSoftware confirmed the surprise update, which marks the beginning of Nightreign’s live-service roadmap with more brutal encounters coming soon.
