Breakdown

  • The final boss of Hades 2 hides a neat trick up its sleeve, one that breaks the fourth wall
  • Attempting to pause the game during the fight for a much-needed break will result in Chronos unpausing and taunting you
  • The fourth wall break is one of the best in a boss fight since Psycho Mantis in Metal Gear Solid

Imagine this - you're finally at the last boss fight of Hades 2. You've taken on hundreds of enemies, accepted gifts for the various gods of Olympus, and you've done the impossible. Just as you've got the boss to 50% health, you get an important phone call, something you've been waiting for all day. Whatever you do, DON'T answer that call.

That's because Chronos doesn't play fair. While most of us are still trying to fight all of the Hades 2 bosses, wondering where Zagreus is in Hades 2, some people have made it to the final encounter and found that Chronos isn't exactly easy.

In a clip shared to Twitter by user 88kumo, Chronos won't let you pause the game, taunting you for attempting to defy your fate with pesky breaks. He says things like "how very rude of you to even try" or "you only prolong your demise", as you desperately try to take a much-needed break away from your PC.

If you've powered yourself up with enough Hades 2 Boons, you'd have spent a lot of time getting to this point, and a surprise important call or visit from family could potentially ruin your current run - that perfect attempt you thought would seal your victory.

This is one of the best uses of a fourth wall break in years, with another iconic boss offering a similar encounter. Psycho Mantis, who debuted in the 1998 Metal Gear Solid, would scan your save files for games, commenting on them during your fight with him. Psycho Mantis would also directly affect the fight, much like Chronos does in Hades 2, except the Metal Gear Solid boss would force you to switch controller ports, for example.

So, if you've been picking out the perfect Hades 2 Keepsakes, and you've unlocked the best Hades 2 Weapon Aspects, you may want to also prepare for a long fight with Chronos - one where you'll inevitably lose control.
