It looks like we won’t be seeing Hideo Kojima’s next game until the year 2030. PHYSINT, his spiritual successor to the iconic Metal Gear franchise, “may take 5–6 years to complete,” according to a recent interview with Le Film Francais (via VGC) during this year’s Cannes Festival.
The comment came in response to whether Kojima plans to move into filmmaking after wrapping up his current game projects. He explained that he would only consider making a film once PHYSINT is complete, and even then, there are still plenty of games ahead. One of those is his joint project with Microsoft, a horror title that could recapture the eerie brilliance of P.T.
Fans have weighed in, suggesting that Kojima should make a film from time to time, since it’s clearly one of his passions. That doesn’t seem likely, as he’s currently juggling three major titles: Death Stranding 2, OverDose (OD), and PHYSINT in the next few years.
With Death Stranding 2 nearly finished and gearing up for launch this June 26, Kojima Productions is shifting focus to OD, a horror game being developed in collaboration with acclaimed Hollywood director Jordan Peele. Not much is known about the game yet, aside from its cryptic teaser, but it features a star-studded cast including Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer, and Udo Kier.
After that, the next big title on Kojima’s plate is PHYSINT. While details are scarce, we know it will be an action-espionage game and a spiritual successor to Metal Gear. It’s being published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, in contrast to OD, which is a Microsoft-backed project.
For now, Death Stranding 2 remains the most immediate Kojima release, and early previews are looking promising. Unlike its predecessor, the sequel has mostly avoided controversy, surprising the acclaimed game creator.
There’s still plenty of Kojima games to keep us busy while we wait for the eccentric developer to make the leap to film. In the meantime, his games continue to feel more and more like modern cinema, as shown by all the big-name actors he hires. Those cutscenes are also ridiculously long, as MGS4 and Death Stranding fans will tell you.
