Following weeks of leaks and speculation, Activision has officially revealed that 2023's Call of Duty title will be Modern Warfare 3. Although the publisher has only confirmed the game's name, there's already plenty of intel on offer surrounding Sledgehammer Games' next release.
It had previously revealed that Modern Warfare 2 items will transfer over into the new game, while recent leaks have claimed to contain information on the gun list that could feature in its multiplayer modes.
With the logo now out in the open, players are already sharing their cautious excitement and hopes for the game, as Activision and Sledgehammer Games prepare to share more information on what they have in store.
Call of Duty players "excited" about Modern Warfare 3
Shortly after Activision's announcement, user TheMink0921 took to Reddit to share what they ideally want to see from the sixth entry into the Modern Warfare series.
The player suggested: "This is almost exactly the same scenario that happened (with) the original Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3. (The games were) super similar in gameplay, but their distinctions were still enough to make the two feel pretty different."
Others in the thread shared similarly optimistic viewpoints, with one declaring: "This one is shaping up to be a potential buy for me, and I'm genuinely excited to see what they do with the game this year."
If leaks are to be believed, Modern Warfare 3 was intended to act as a second year of support for Modern Warfare 2, which could mean TheMink0921's hopes of it offering a similar experience with a few key revisions are more likely to come true. According to Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, the game was meant to be "a premium expansion, before morphing into a full title."
Considering there's a high chance of Modern Warfare 3 containing plenty of content from other Call of Duty titles, it's too early to tell whether the game will manage to rectify the issues that have irked players during the Modern Warfare 2 cycle.
With content creators seemingly confirming the return of a popular movement mechanic, the early signs suggest Sledgehammer Games could be moving in the right direction.
