Capcom’s recent DRM release has been a nightmare for gamers, with several games no longer playable on their PC or Steam Deck. The latest victim of this is Monster Hunter Rise, a game that many people are still playing to this day, as it is no longer playable on Valve’s handheld.
A fan posted a negative review on the official Steam Deck subreddit, confirming that the recent DRM release has broken the game on this handheld. Many users quickly confirmed that this was the case, with a push to put the review on ProtonDB so that more tech-savvy users could see it.
Unfortunately, the only thing fans can do is wait for a Monster Hunter Rise update, since this is an issue that Capcom themselves made. This isn’t exactly surprising, as the company’s DRM has also affected a number of its older games, including Resident Evil Revelations and various Mega Man Legacy Collections.
For those unaware, Capcom released a DRM on all of their games to prevent mods, which the company sees as a form of cheating. Many gamers are assuming this happened because a tournament of Street Fighter 6 accidentally included a nude mod of Chun-Li. While Capcom hasn’t outright said this is the reason for their recent DRM, it’s easy to assume it is.
Whatever point Capcom may have about releasing this DRM, it has led to them breaking a ton of their games on Steam. The fact players can’t use their copy of Monster Hunter Rise on Steam Deck because the company rushed a DRM is insane. Add the lack of communication with fans, not to mention the seeming lack of testing made with this hardware, and it just makes the company look bad.

Fans who still want to play Monster Hunter Rise may want to pick up the Nintendo Switch version instead. Although it runs worse than the Steam version, it’s still a great game and was made for Nintendo’s system first. Capcom is also working on Monster Hunter Wilds, which is planned for a 2025 release.
