This summer’s been a pretty great one for fighting game fans, with Street Fighter 6 having released to an overwhelmingly positive reception back in June and Mortal Kombat 1 now having arrived in early access form.
No matter whether you’ve already jumped into Mortal Kombat 1 or are waiting until September 19, odds are you’ve been checking out all of the trailers and impressions that’ve been dropping over the past couple of weeks, as well as planning out your battle strategies in advance.
One of fighters that made the most headlines run up to the game’s release was the vampiric Nitara, due to the fact her dulcet tones have been provided by Megan Fox. Unfortunately, it seems that a sizable portion of those who’ve played so far haven’t been impressed by the Transformers star’s vocal performance.
I’m probably going to regret asking, but what do you think of Megan Fox’s voice acting in Mortal Kombat 1?
Since the floodgates into Mortal Kombat 1 opened up to those who invested in the Premium and Kollector's editions of the game, the Mortal Kombat subreddit has filled up with a number of posts suggesting that people aren’t finding Fox’s delivery to their liking.
The main complaint being levelled in these threads looks to be that a lot of Nitara’s dialogue sounds a bit too robotic and passionless, leading players to conclude either that Fox might not have put in effort to deliver them with more conviction or wasn’t directed to do so.
“My main problem is that she doesn't sound intimidating at all,” user oroszakos said in one. “Unfortunately, Nitara sounds too ‘normal’ for a vampire, which is especially jarring when she starts screeching, way too big of a contrast.” They also cited Mortal Kombat 11’s Skarlet as an example of what Fox and NetherRealm could have used as an ideal blueprint for the character.
Meanwhile, the main point of comparison a lot of other players have immediately gone to, perhaps unsurprisingly, is MMA star Ronda Rousey’s portrayal of Sonya Blade in Mortal Kombat 11, which drew a lot of similar criticism back in 2019.
On the plus side, Nitara’s array of in-battle grunts and screams and hisses, provided by seasoned voice actress Cristina Valenzuela, who’s appeared in the likes of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Genshin Impact, seem to be earning more positive reviews.
That said, some players have mistakenly credited one of her hisses to Megan Fox’s cat.
