With Street Fighter 6 having arrived just last week, some fighting game fans have likely been too busy trying to master its modern controls or stick to the rage-preventing ground rules they set themselves ahead of its release to get too hyped up for Summer Games Fest.
That said, one of the biggest pre-announced selling points of the show, which also featured some surprise reveals like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, was an in-depth look at another big fighting game set to arrive this year, in the form of Mortal Kombat 1.
This gameplay-heavy segment occurred fairly early on in the showcase and featured the beloved Ed Boon, but it seems that many fans have come out of it with mixed views on what they saw of the game.
What did you think of Mortal Kombat 1’s Summer Game Fest trailer?
Some of the fighting-focused feelings of these fatality fanatics can be found in recent threads on ResetEra and the subreddit r/MortalKombat, set up to allow fans to share their reactions, thoughts and takeaways from the SGF trailer, which you can watch below.
While both featured some positive comments about it, with the likes of Kenshi’s cameo and the variety of interesting stages on offer drawing a lot of praise and creating excitement, a sizeable contingent of potential players don’t seem as sold.
“I don't want to be that guy but the graphics looked...worse? Also, the gameplay felt more like Injustice and Street Fighter [to me]," said Reddit user Dobi_TheDuck, while, on ResetEra, user Manu mused: “It looks good, but I'm not gonna deny I'm feeling a bit underwhelmed. [It looks like it feels] a bit floatier than MK11 somehow. Some of those animations are lacking weight.”
Others on Reddit seemed quite sceptical about the game’s Kameo Fighters, which are “partner characters that assist your main roster fighter during matches,” with user TM10398 referring to it as a “gimmick” and kucerkaCZ saying that it “looks like the assists from Mortal Kombat 11, but way more immersion-breaking.”
Also taking a bit of flak were the game’s character designs and art style, with the former being labelled “generic” by one user on Reddit, while ReseEra user NeoRaider dubbed the latter: “not [like traditional] Mortal Kombat at all.”
