Just a few days after the 2024 Game Awards, rumors and leaks about Nintendo's next-gen console are circling the internet again. From speculations about its release in February 2025 to how it fits cartridges from the original Nintendo Switch, these leaks excite Nintendo fans eager to see the new system.

In addition to the larger screen size and curvier Joy-Con shape, the leaked Nintendo Switch 2 designs feature interesting magnetic Joy-Cons that snap into place.

This design is much more intuitive than the original Nintendo Switch's rail-slide Joy-Cons, which many users had some confusion with when sliding the Joy-Cons into their respective rails. There were multiple instances when players would have their Joy-Cons stuck on the wrong side of the tablet.

Having magnetic snap-on ones is the perfect design for a handheld console that has detachable controllers.

In a YouTube video uploaded by @NerdNest, he showcased how the Joy-Cons snap into the tablet seamlessly. While the Joy-Cons look larger, these also feel more robust now that it lacks the slide-on rail. Instead, that section of the Joy-Con has a much more solid build with larger SR/SL buttons and a magnetic lock mechanism.

Nintendo is known for its interesting controller designs, starting with its first consoles. From the GBA SP design to the GameCube and Wii controllers, Nintendo has always taken a quirky approach to creating its peripherals.

The original Switch's Joy-Cons were interesting because they combined the Wii-mote's portability and function while allowing players to play games as if they were using traditional controllers.

Interestingly, one handheld gaming device with magnetic snap-on controllers is the Lenovo Legion Go. While the handheld gaming PC has a somewhat different target demographic than Nintendo, this magnetic snap-on feature for Switch 2 is a win for many Nintendo fans.

If you are still hesitant about the upcoming Switch 2, worry no more—it is confirmed to have backward compatibility, which enables you to play your old Nintendo Switch games. Meanwhile, follow Gfinity Esports to stay updated about the latest gaming news and stories.
