Palworld may have stopped breaking records but it’s still one of the biggest stories in gaming this year, mixing Pokémon with survival sim gameplay. The game is so big that Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa was asked about it during the company’s earnings Q&A.
Reuters reported that Furukawa was asked about the Pokémon competitor during the aforementioned earnings call, due to accusations of the game plagiarising Pokémon designs. Furukawa simply reiterated previous comments, saying that they will continue investigating the game and will take appropriate action if needed.
“We will take appropriate action against those that infringe our intellectual property rights,” Furukawa said about Palworld.
The Pokémon Company previously said something similar about Palworld, releasing a statement about a rival game that might have reused their assets. At the time of writing, we still haven’t heard anything about the company’s investigation, though more results might come later on.
It will be interesting to see if there is any credibility towards those accusations, though that won’t stop the fact that this game is a success. Palworld was only released a few weeks ago and the game has already sold millions of copies, something most triple-A games struggle to do. Based on how well it’s doing, we wouldn’t be surprised if the game continues to dominate sales charts throughout the year.
For the most part, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company don’t seem to be too worried about this competitor, legal threats aside. Gaming insiders have claimed that the companies are taking criticism of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet to heart, as they work on the next entries. At this point, it seems like they won’t fix the game’s performance issues and most gamers seem to have accepted that.
