Persona 5: The Phantom X has officially been revealed by Atlus after a major tease from the company and leaks detailing its release. This is huge news for fans of the acclaimed Atlus RPG series, though many will also be annoyed at the company milking this specific entry. Still, after years of waiting, fans all over the world can try this game next month.
It took a while, but Persona 5: The Phantom X is officially coming out worldwide, and it might get me into gacha games again. Granted, this is a pretty icky genre, and mobile games aren’t known for having long lifespans these days. Still, with the free-to-play title coming to iOS, Android, and Steam on June 26, I can’t help but check out this new group of Phantom Thieves.
Rather than control Joker, Panther, Queen, Skull, and everyone else, this is a new crew who have their own story. A summary from Gematsu confirms that players control another nameless protagonist, whose trauma leads him to a talking owl named Lefaye and the Velvet Room’s residents. This protagonist also has an interesting crew of Phantom Thieves, as they’re a mix of high school students and adults rebelling against the system.
Honestly, as someone who is a little too addicted to this particular entry, I’m interested in seeing how two groups of Phantom Thieves can co-exist. Given the gacha mechanics, I doubt this is going to be a canon story, but spending time with two groups of thieves does seem fun. We also assume that the original group is going to be unlockable, since this is a gacha game after all.
Beyond that, we’re interested in seeing how Persona 5: The Phantom X turns the regular game’s various mechanics into a free-to-play title. We’re going to assume that exploring dungeons and being with friends will have more timed mechanics that will force players to pay for more time. It will be amusing to see how the game justifies these mechanics.
To be honest, I just want to see my favorites like Joker and Makoto get new outfits when The Phantom X comes out. We also previously talked about some of the hilarious censored demons that will be in this game, making us realize how vulgar these original designs were. It might cost me more money than I’d like, but that won’t bother me too much if the game is compatible with Valve’s Steam Deck.
Overall, it will be interesting to revisit the gacha world with Persona 5: The Phantom X. It won’t replace the experience fans will get when playing Persona 5 Royal, but we hope it’s a fun game.
