Sony closed out January by announcing their acquisition of Bungie, the ex-Halo developers who currently handle Destiny, but there's more to come. No further studios have been named yet, but Sony confirmed we should expect future announcements.
Jim Ryan, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, told Gamesindustry.biz the following:
“We should absolutely expect more [acquisitions]. We are by no means done. With PlayStation, we have a long way to go. I will personally be spending a lot of my time with [Bungie CEO] Pete [Parsons] and the team at Bungie, helping make sure that everything beds down right and that autonomy means autonomy. But elsewhere in the organization, we have many more moves to make.”
PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan Says More Acquisitions After Bungie Are Coming
Elaborating further, Ryan confirmed this purchase will increase the company’s ability to make live-service games, alongside other multi-platform titles. Reportedly, this acquisition's been in the works for nearly half a year, meaning it wasn't a rushed reaction to Microsoft purchasing Activision Blizzard.
Both Bungie and Sony has confirmed the latter will continue making games for rival platforms, so Destiny 2 will continue receiving multi-platform updates and expansions. Soon as we hear more, we'll keep you informed.
