While nothing beats a good platinum trophy for those who consider themselves completionists, being able to receive a reward for your sportsmanship in online games seems like a good idea in principle.

After all, with so many gamers complaining about toxicity in everything from Apex Legends to League of Legends, having another way to convince people to change their competitive ways surely might help to combat this, right?

Apparently not in the case of the PS5’s Accolades feature, which fell into obscurity pretty quickly and is now set to bite the dust.

Sony’s Feature Designed to Reward Sportsmanship Successes Ends Up Being Unsuccessful

This is according to a note on the Playstation website, which states: “In fall of 2022, the Accolades feature on PlayStation 5 will no longer be supported. The feature hasn’t seen the level of usage we anticipated, so we are refocusing our efforts.”

In line with Sony’s statement regarding the feature’s usage level, many players reacted to the news on social media by either saying that they didn’t know it existed or admitting that they’d never received one despite playing online regularly since the console’s release.

Luckily, any players who might not have known about the feature and want to give props to others after it disappears will still be able to do so in the old-fashioned way, with Sony saying: “We encourage the community to continue to send positive messages to one another.”

While these messages may be positive, feedback on a lot of the new user interface features introduced with the PS5 has been negative, with the Accolades feature hardly being alone in inspiring players to ask ‘why is that a thing?’

So, don’t be surprised if features like cards are next on the list to be phased out if Sony deems their uptake not sufficient enough to make them worth maintaining long-term.
