Pokémon has always been a beloved game for many players, as most began gaming with the classics on early Nintendo consoles. Its gameplay was simple: Catch Pokémon, build a team, explore the different towns, battle Gym Leaders, and become one of the best trainers.

While that is the goal for most players, many enjoy encountering new Pokémon, learning their moves and their evolutions (if there are any). Regional variants or forms were even introduced in Sun and Moon for the Nintendo 3DS.

However, a recent leak for the upcoming and latest Pokémon game, Pokémon Legends: Z-A, revealed an upsetting detail: The game will not include any new Pokémon species.

While the leak was not extremely specific, it would still be disappointing whether this meant that there are literally no new Pokémon or just no new Regional variants. Almost all the previous Pokémon games introduced new Pokémon species, which shocked many players. The game's predecessor, Pokémon Legends: Arceus, only had seven new Pokémon, but it also included more than 10 new forms for existing Pokémon.

However, Mega Evolutions would reappear in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. This first appeared in Pokémon X and Y for the Nintendo 3DS. Mega Evolutions are only temporary transformations that, after some time, revert to their original form. It should also be noted that Pokémon X and Y had the fewest new species introduced among all the main Pokémon games, and Pokémon Legends: Z-A may come on top or be a close second if the leak is true.

Since this was only a leak, there's still hope that new Pokémon species will be introduced in the game. However, it could also turn out to be accurate, as Game Freak may focus on releasing most new Pokémon in the future 10th-gen game. The Switch 2's release may also solidify the release of a new Pokémon game, since Pokémon Legends: Z-A is mainly for the Switch.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A is set to be released for the Nintendo Switch around late 2025, with no specific date mentioned. The game can possibly be played on the Nintendo Switch 2, but it is unknown whether there will be any enhancements or changes.
