Sony’s PlayStation 4 is going to sunset sooner rather than later, and most gamers have accepted that fact. With the PS5 able to play most PS4 games, there’s little reason to keep this old console, unless players are sentimental, struggling financially, or don’t have much interest in Sony’s current-gen system. While this makes it ripe for piracy, Sony's recent update shows the company is ready to prevent any illegal activity.

PlayStation Lifestyle reported that the latest firmware patch for the last-gen console, PS4 update 12.52, includes “security fixes”. Despite the system going the way of the dodo, Sony is hellbent on preventing piracy, even though it’s their best-selling console and they’re all in on the PS5. It’s a surprising move, showing the company keeps tabs on its last-gen system.

While Sony has been more lenient than Nintendo when it comes to piracy, it’s not much better than what the Mario company does. Although they won’t brick your system, the company releasing updates to prevent piracy is surprising, especially with a potential PS6 coming soon.

There are still games coming to Sony’s PS4, so it makes some sense to keep it alive. Despite showing signs of a dying console, PlayStation is still selling games on it, hence this security update. Sony might have limited some of the PS4 games coming to PS Plus, but we are still seeing releases for this older machine.

Admittedly, Sony kept the PS2 and PS3 alive long after their expiry dates, so this is in-character for the company.

It’s only a matter of time before Sony’s last-gen system sunsets, and that will be sad for many. Despite the slow start, this console ended up as one of Sony’s best, with killer titles that the PS5 has yet to live up to. The PS4 is special, and fans hope that the PS5 will eventually get to its level.
