With the remake of Resident Evil 4 having arrived late last month, it’s a great time to be a horror game buff in search of something to play with the lights off and scare yourself silly.

Some of these fearless fans have simply set the game to the highest difficulty possible, picked out their favourite weapon or unorthodox control scheme and dived into the terrifying action, but others are getting their kicks out of modding the game, just as they did with its demo.

While some of the efforts of these hardcore horror lovers have already added the likes of Thomas the Tank Engine and a mouse version of Ashley to the game, as well as replacing its insect-based enemies to help out those who fear bugs, if you’re a big fan of the new Super Mario Bros movie, a new mod might be just what you’re looking for.

Desperate to try and reenact the Mario movie in Resident Evil 4’s Remake?

The mod in question is simply called ‘Super Mario Bros’ and is the work of modder SupremeLeader777, who has previously added a bunch of pandas to Capcom’s latest remake and Yakuza protagonist Kazuma Kiryu to Resi 3.

This time, however, they’ve decided to usher a pair of wholesome moustachioed plumbers into the creepy, plaga-filled environment of Resi 4, swapping out Leon for Mario and Luis for Luigi.

As you can see from the images on the mod’s page, this makes some sections of the game during which the pair end up working together pretty surreal, though the mine cart ride and El Gigante duo battle from Chapter 11 might start to look a bit like levels from the Mushroom Kingdom if you squint very hard and find a way to rationalise the fact Mario’s now packing a shotgun.

Thankfully, the majority of the Resi fans who’ve already commented on the mod seem to be on board, with user kzspeedy saying: “Super funny mod man. I had a laugh.” and adding: “You’ve got to (transform) Ashley (into) Princess Peach, Ada (into) Rosalina, and Saddler (into) Bowser (next).”

That said, some of them have complained about the Luis Luigi not showing up in cutscenes, so bear that in mind if you’re hoping for a seamless Super Mario experience.

Also, if you’re a fan of the game’s Mercenaries Mode, SupremeLeader777 has also done a separate mod, called ‘Luigi Luis (Merc Mode)’ that seemingly makes the Luis Luigi playable in that minigame.
