The seventh annual Variety500 list has dropped, which aims to recognise and shed some light on the 500 most influential business leaders in the global media industry. Among those recognised for their accolades and achievements was Remedy Entertainment's Creative Director Sam Lake. You may not know him by name, but Lake is the brains behind one of the best releases in 2023, Alan Wake 2, and loaned his likeness to the game as grisly detective Alex Casey.

As shared on Remedy's X (formerly Twitter) page, Lake is the only Finnish individual included in the list and one of only six game developers to get the nod from Variety magazine. It's no surprise to see Lake there, given the latest instalment in the Alan Wake survival horror series garnered a plethora of recognition, securing multiple wins at The Game Awards in December, including Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, and Best Art Direction.

Sam Lake didn't just handle the creative direction of Alan Wake 2; he also played the role of FBI agent Alex Casey. It's a unique twist as the character shares the same name and potentially more connections with a fictional detective in books penned by the in-game novelist Alan Wake.

Remedy, a game studio from Finland, is notable among big game makers, and Sam Lake's storytelling skills are a big reason. Alan Wake 2, released in October of 2023, has resonated strongly in the survival horror genre, offering a compelling storyline and captivating gameplay. Published by Epic Games, the game's achievements at The Game Awards highlight its impact and recognition within the gaming community.

Lake's creative storytelling and vision expertise contributed to Alan Wake 2 success and played a pivotal role in Control, Remedy's previous hit, earning eight Game Awards nominations and winning the Best Art Direction category.

The seventh edition of Variety500 emphasizes the achievements of influential figures over the past year. Including game developers highlights the rising significance of the gaming industry within the broader entertainment landscape. Sam Lake's presence on this prestigious list highlights the growing impact of gaming as a powerful medium for storytelling and entertainment.
