Sonic Frontiers received mildly positive reviews at launch, but most would agree that it’s a pretty flawed game, albeit, one with plenty of potential. Hilariously, the folks at SEGA not only think it’s a good game but also put it up there with Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

In an interview with Famitsu (translated by Automaton), SEGA game director Morio Kishimoto and producer Sachiko Kawamura talked about how Frontiers has sold 3.5 million copies. While an impressive feat, Kishimoto wants to know why this game hasn’t sold as well as titles like Tears of the Kingdom, claiming Frontiers is just as good.

"What did we miss when thinking of ways to appeal to players? If there's something that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom or Armored Core 6 have that Sonic Frontiers doesn't have, we want to know!” Kishimoto says.

On one hand, we understand why Kishimoto would say Sonic Frontiers is on par with these two games since you should always believe in your products and their worth. However, this is still a reach for most, since Tears of the Kingdom blew everyone away with its perfected gameplay from Breath of the Wild.

Admittedly, not everyone likes Tears of the Kingdom and it’s not fair to compare a sequel to an already-liked game to a franchise trying something new. Still, it’s a comparison that Kishimoto brought up and one that fans are allowed to comment on. Plus, SEGA still thinks Sonic is better than Mario, so their attitude isn’t surprising.

Sonic Frontiers isn’t a horrible game and actually has some fun mechanics that most gamers will be able to enjoy. However, the bad 2D sections, weird boss fights, and simplistic combat prevent it from reaching greatness.

Unfortunately, Sonic Frontiers just isn’t on the same level as Tears of the Kingdom, but it’s not bad either. Frontiers is available now on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Switch, and PC.
