Sony is celebrating PlayStation's 30th Anniversary and has just announced that the PlayStation 2 console is still the biggest-selling console of all time, with a whopping 160 million units sold.

While 2024 is almost over, Sony is proving that no one, not even Nintendo and its music app, can top the greatest achievement in console gaming history.

While Nintendo seems to be winning the 2024 console wars with the fantastic games and apps it has released over the past months, the Japanese titan is still having difficulties beating Sony's PS2 in terms of console sales for the Switch, which sold almost 150 million units.

We don't want to start any fire here, especially after The Game Awards sparked a massive debate among gamers and fans by considering DLCs as GOTY nominees. Still, Sony seems to want to end 2024 with a huge grin, smirking at Nintendo.

Coincidentally, Sony stated on their website that the best Resident Evil ever (which is Resident Evil 4, by the way) was a PS2 launch title. However, everyone who bought Nintendo's Gamecube at that time, including our senior editor Alister Kennedy, knows that Resident Evil 4 was part of the Capcom Five - titles set to become Gamecube exclusives.

Resident Evil 4 launched on Gamecube on January 11, 2005. Its PS2 version was released on October 25, 2005, almost ten months after its initial Gamecube release.

This makes Nintendo's Gamecube the original console where Resident Evil 4 initially launched.

So then, why is Sony saying that the PS2 gave birth to Leon's adventure against the Las Plagas? Especially when the Father of Resident Evil, Shinji Mikami, once said that he'll cut his head off if RE4 releases on another console? (Mr. Mikami is alive and well; that's just the Japanese of "quitting his job," so no worries here, folks)

The answer lies in Resident Evil 4's interesting development history. In 1999, when the original Pokemon Gold and Silver was the talk of the town, Capcom had already planned to develop RE4 for the PlayStation 2.

But then, direction changes occurred. Resident Evil 4's original developmental version became the first Devil May Cry as Mikami felt it was too far removed from the previous games.

The development of the classic Resident Evil 4 we now know today then restarted in 2001.

So Sony is technically correct when it says Resident Evil 4 was born on PS2; it just came out looking like Dante. Devil May Cry became one of the most popular action RPG franchises in gaming history.

We all know that Resident Evil 4 came out of the Gamecube first (sorry, Sony; we are not falling for that), but if Sony recognizes the pre-release Dante as Resident Evil 4 because they are technically correct, then so be it.

Nintendo will have to pass on this and make 2025 a better year with the Switch 2.
