Most of the hardcore Bethesda fans who’ve invested thousands of hours into Skyrim and Fallout 4 couldn’t wait for the chance to start digging into Starfield.
No matter whether you paid for early access or jumped into the game on September 6, odds are, if you’ve avoided spending all day getting up to wacky hijinks, you’ve likely already blazed through a lot of missions and moulded your character into a hardened spacer.
No matter whether you’re after Thomas the Tank Engine or better rewards, the game’s modding scene is already home to a bunch of works that can augment your adventures in space, with one of the latest being worth checking out if you’re sick of getting strange looks from NPCs.
Have Starfield's creepy NPC stares left you cowering in your ship?
The mod in question is called 'Stop Staring at Me - Less NPC Headtracking' and is the work of modder fadingsignal. You might be familiar with them as the person who brought some truly impressive storms to the weather patterns of Tamriel and The Commonwealth.
This time, they’ve decided to take on the task of saving Starfield’s interstellar explorers from being creeped out by the prying eyes of bystanders every time they stop off at a settlement or spaceport.
"Maybe you're [roleplaying] as the sexiest human in the universe [and] you're so hot that every person in town breaks their neck to get a look at you when you enter any room! *whistles*," writes fadingsignal, "but I like to feel like I blend into the world."
In line with this, their mod aims to get rid of all of those terrifying stares you can receive at random from NPCs who were previously just chilling out in the vicinity of your conversation or getting on with their own business as you walked by.
So yes, for better or worse given the default setting’s potential for occasionally creating hilarious moments like the one above, fadingsignal’s work "prevents NPCs from staring at you unless you're realistically close to them," via some simple tweaks that won’t disable achievements.
According to the modder, the changes should be "immediately noticeable" if you take a walk through a crowded location like Neon after installing. So, now you can enjoy not being the centre of attention every time you stop to pick up a mission or some cargo.
